Opening and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey
Reginald Titus Jr.: What we've been watching, Episode Two. Welcome to "What We've Been Watching," an offshoot of Filmmaker Commentary, hosted by Reginald Titus Jr. and Casey G. Smith. We will run through the week of the shows, movies, and media that we've been watching. Let you know what we think, let you know what's hot, and we thank you for joining us. So now, here's what we've been watching.
Casey G. Smith: All right, what? Okay, I'll just go. I'll just go first. The Odyssey. I watched the trailer for The Odyssey. So it's being, it's being directed by Christopher Nolan.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes, sir.
Casey G. Smith: I watched the trailer, and I'm like, all right. I think I don't know if it's like the full trailer, but I think it's like a teaser trailer, but it's enough for him to get my money. I was like, I don't know what it is about Christopher Nolan and what he does, but there's something going on there. It's just like he makes like stuff that seems like it should be boring or mundane, and he makes it like a spectacle.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Epics. He makes it epics.
Casey G. Smith: Epics, epics. That's what it is.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's what it is. I'm try, I think I saw the trailer for The Odyssey as well.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm. It's got Matt Damon in it. We keep talking about Matt Damon, but he keeps popping up, he keeps popping up.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I, I think, oh, is Tom Holland in it as well?
Casey G. Smith: I think so.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I, man, I saw the trailer a little while ago. I just didn't write it down, but yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, I have seen it a little bit. Yeah, same for me. I watched it a little while ago, but I was like, oh, I did watch that, because this is like a big thing. I don't know if they did like pre-sales, are they selling pre-sales for the film, and selling out early? I think that's like the big news behind The Odyssey, is that it's already selling out.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Very interesting to say. But, uh, yeah, I think, I think I'll go see it. But I, I'd like to see another trailer. I'll say that much. I'd like to see another trailer before I make my final decision.
Casey G. Smith: Because you're gonna be locked in that theater for about three hours anyway.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's what I figure. But, hey, you know, I, I like movies, I like films, and The Odyssey is a, is a, is a classic tale.

Classic Films and Modern Marvels
Casey G. Smith: True. What you been watching, brother?
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, I'm gonna dive right into it. I don't have any other trailers to speak of, but on Netflix, no, let me back up. Um, that's gonna be my next one. On Amazon Prime, I watched a film called Barefoot in the Park.
Casey G. Smith: Barefoot in the Park? On Netflix?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Are you familiar? Oh, no, this is on Amazon Prime.
Casey G. Smith: Amazon Prime. Mm-mm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Have you heard? So this is an older film. This is a film I'd seen before. And, how did I, how did I rabbit trail into, into this? So I got on some rabbit trail while I was looking at older films. And I think this sprung out of watching, what was it? Something I watched last time. I, okay, I know what happened. So, I watched Wonder Man, and in Wonder Man they watched the film Midnight Cowboy. And so when I watched Midnight Cowboy,
Casey G. Smith: Oh.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I think I watched it on Amazon Prime, and then it started suggesting other older films. And then I saw Barefoot in the Park. I'm like, oh, Barefoot in the Park. So, Barefoot in the Park is based off a stage play. It takes place in the, maybe mid, maybe early 60s. But it stars one, uh, Jane Fonda.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: A young, vivacious Jane Fonda, who, man, Jane Fonda in her early days, man, she is, she is so sexy. And just her personality is, oh, wee. Yes, she is. She's, she's got it. And then you have the, the, the, kind of on the rise star of the, I guess the decade in the in the 60s and 70s, you have one Robert Redford.
Casey G. Smith: Okay, okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And they have this just, this, they're newly, the film was such a, boom, they're they're a newlywed couple, checking into a hotel. And they're there, they're in the hotel, they don't, you know, this is the 60s, they don't show you in the hotel, but just outside the room, you see more papers getting stacked up each day as they're in there just having their honeymoon. And it's just a, a woody, fast dialogue, uh, opposites attract love story.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And I remember watching it when I was younger, maybe in high school, and it always it's, it's, it's a charming film. And so yeah, so I watched it on Amazon Prime and it was, it's, yeah, it's still, still very charming.
Casey G. Smith: Barefoot in the Park.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Barefoot in the Park. Dang. And you'll, you later on you'll find out why it's called that, but
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: A delightful little film.
Casey G. Smith: What year? 80s? Is it 80s, 70s?
Reginald Titus Jr.: No, this is, this is, it's, it's in color. It's not black and white. I can see you ready as, is it in black and white? No, this is, this is, this is in color. Yeah. This is, again, I'm gonna give you the exact year that that it came out, but it's, it's in the 60s.
Casey G. Smith: Remember, I remember that movie we had watched, me, my, my sister, my dad. It was a movie that was, it was in black and white, it was on Tubi, and it was called The Apartment. I think it was, yeah, it was called The Apartment. And we enjoyed that movie. It was like, it was a solid piece of entertainment. No groteque, you know, sex or violence. Just talent on the screen.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Just talent.
Reginald Titus Jr.: This, uh, came out in, uh, 1967.
Casey G. Smith: Oh. Too rich for my blood. Too violent for me. Too violent for me.
Reginald Titus Jr.: But, uh, a, a lovely little film. Barefoot, Barefoot in the Park. I, yeah, just very charming. It just I don't know, it, it, every now and then, I'm down for a movie from the, from the 60s.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And yeah, it, it, it, it hits nice.
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Um, I finally watched Wonder Man, right? Wrote about it. Yeah, that's right. Wrote about it and watched it, and enjoyed it. Good suggestion. The like I said, the trailer, I was like, I was, I was intrigued.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Sure.
Casey G. Smith: And I was like, I'm gonna watch it one day. I just don't know what day that's gonna be. And then when you said what you said about it, I was like, okay, it moved up the list. It moved right up. And I would have finished it in one day, but I had things to do. And so it took me two days to finish. Um, yeah, well done, Marvel. Like, uh, a breath of fresh air.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Indeed.
Casey G. Smith: Because I didn't watch any Marvel stuff last year. And, um, this was cool.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Very different from any of their previous entries. Very grounded, and something you could watch without any previous MCU knowledge. This is a, a standalone spotlight feature.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, directed by, uh, Dustin, uh, I almost said Dustin Diamond. That's not it. But the same director who did Shang-Chi. And,
Casey G. Smith: Oh, okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And he's the director behind the new Spider-Man brand new day film dropping this summer in July.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, that's smart. Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, this guy, this guy's on fire.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, I like it. Yeah, it's well done. I actually, um, told one of our actor buddies, hey, you need to go check this out. Check this out.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Is he acting like Simon again?
Casey G. Smith: Just like, hey, he said, why you want to you watch? I don't, I'm not, I don't have a subscription or anything. Just watch. I think you'll like it. As an actor, you would appreciate it. He just recently hit me back. He was just like, yeah, man. I thought you would might like it. Because there's not, as an actor, you don't really get to, you know, people don't really get to see what actors go through in order to entertain us.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Exactly. The, the work that they've been putting in, or the struggle that they've been going through, trying to, trying to land those roles, overcome the rejection, and just stay and, you know, be supported or not supported by family.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, I'm not gonna spoil Wonder Man, but, um, it was, yeah, it was just a breath of fresh air, man. Yeah, that was, yeah, thoroughly entertained and it wasn't too crazy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I'm very, very glad you enjoyed it.

Documentaries and Contemporary Comedies
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, the next thing that I watched that was referring to at the beginning, was on Netflix, and it was simply called Cowboys, America's Team, or the, the
Casey G. Smith: Ah, yes, yes.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Ah, yes.
Casey G. Smith: I think we got like, how many episodes was it?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Ooh. Five? Five or six?
Casey G. Smith: Really?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. Maybe, maybe just five episodes.
Casey G. Smith: Uh-huh.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Man. Frickin' awesome. So, it's about the Dallas Cowboys.
Casey G. Smith: Of course.
Reginald Titus Jr.: If you haven't guessed why they say America's Team.
Casey G. Smith: That's right.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And it is a, a, a wonderful docu-series. Even if you're not a Cowboys fan, they do a, a, a nice job of bringing in talent from other teams the Cowboys faced. When you talk about their heyday in the 90s, but this thing does a great job of really giving you insight of where Jerry Jones came from, what he was doing, how he got the funds to acquire the team in the 80s, and then of course his immediately firing of Tom Landry, which is like sacrilege.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, man.
Reginald Titus Jr.: In Dallas.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: But, uh, and then he'll bring in on, uh, uh, Jimmy Jones and, excuse me, Jimmy Johnson.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And, you know, them having a terrible record, beginning to rebuild, and trading Herschel Walker. There was a lot that I didn't know. I'll be honest. I, I didn't, uh, I didn't know about the Herschel Walker thing.
Casey G. Smith: I didn't either. Because I mean, it was like, why are we getting rid of Herschel Walker? I used to collect the football cards and baseball cards, basketball. That's how I learned about a lot of players' stats and everything. Um, and I didn't understand that. You know, I was like, what? You know, I, you know, now.
Reginald Titus Jr.: He came back and played for Dallas like later on.
Casey G. Smith: He did. Yeah, he was like more like special teams kinda guy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I remember that. I'm like, okay, I'm hearing about this guy, but I didn't realize he had played for Dallas before. I was like, oh, so that was cool to kind of see that full, connect some dots. And then, uh, they trade him, right? And that really frees up the space for them to, to really begin to build the team, right? All right, we're bringing on Michael Irvin. All right, we're bringing on Troy Aikman, we're bringing on Emmitt Smith. And the way this thing is shot, it, it gives these wonderful kind of highlight of each of these players that each, they're each kind of sitting at their own set with, with like a Western backdrop behind them.
Casey G. Smith: Uh. Yeah. Yeah, it's like like gun slinging, you know.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And, and the lights kind of it's, it's very cinematic, like the lights kind of turn on, yeah. And then, you know, they're sitting in the dark and then, all right, they get illuminated.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah, smiling, very, you know, Deion Sanders, whoever.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, yeah, when they bring on the, and they, they, then we get to run through, uh, that time period of the 80s into the 90s. We get to hear about some of the deals that Jerry's making.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: We, of course, we go through the Super Bowl runs, which is really like the crux of it all. We see the Super Bowl wins, we see the fallout between, uh, Jimmy and Jerry. We see, when it gets to the lean years, it's like just, it's just, it's just literally like decades. Like, oh, wow. We're like, with a couple of small, like highlights. We get a whole episode dedicated to, uh, Michael Irvin's like legal struggles with like the cocaine stuff.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, it's terrible.
Casey G. Smith: Man, that, that is so hilarious because I, I think I went three episodes. I didn't, we didn't get to finish. I watched it with my family. They love football. We just kind of got off of it. But anytime they talk about the White House is hilarious. I mean, it's just like a house, like in Arlington, Texas or something like that.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. Very unassuming.
Casey G. Smith: They called it the White House. And every time they bring it up because Michael Irvin talks about this like on just random podcasts and they bring up the White House like, to this day they kind of talk about it, but they don't say everything that was going on. They say, hey, man. Emmitt Smith, everybody just laughed, but it was like the White House. They were just doing the most.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Did you, did you get to that episode where they kind of dive into that?
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, the beginning, um, I don't think I watched that whole episode on that one.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Highly recommend checking it out. It's, it's very, very interesting to see the context of them breaking it down. And even like the, when he goes on, on trial, how all that plays out, very interesting. I'm like, oh, wow, like he absolutely dodged a bullet. I'm like, wow. Anyway, but it's, it's all really well done. And then even seeing get to the point of, of, of how like Michael Irvin's career ended, like the injury. Just making just one, one play. And you see it, it doesn't look, it's one of those things, it doesn't look that bad.
Casey G. Smith: The White House. Okay.
Casey G. Smith: Like the Bo Jackson thing, you know, you get tackled. Just looks like you got tackled.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: But major things are going on with that.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Exactly. And with Irvin with his neck, he had spinal stenosis. And, uh, he could have found a doctor to clear him to play, but his, his family convinced him, you know, we don't wanna get that call that you're paralyzed or something like that. So he, uh, you know, gave up the game, but,
Casey G. Smith: Dang.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wonderful docu-series. Highly, highly recommend. Again, whether you're a foot, whether you're a Cowboys fan or not, you get some nice cameos from everybody from Jerry Rice to, uh, Steve Young, to, uh, John Elway. And even other supporting Cowboys players, uh, from, um, I wanna say, what's our, what's our guy who was,
Casey G. Smith: Leon Lett, um.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You might see Leon Lett. You might see, uh, what's our guy he, he came over from San Francisco?
Casey G. Smith: Oh, Deion Sanders?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, before Deion. This guy played on the, uh,
Casey G. Smith: Oh, the crazy one. Um, he, what's his name? Not Kenny. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Um, uh, wow. Yeah. I'm blanking on his name, but,
Casey G. Smith: This dude's crazy. Like, literally crazy. Uh, and Charles Haley, right?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Haley, yeah. Charles Haley.
Casey G. Smith: Man, they got so many stories. He's like one of those guys, he's, who, what is his character like? Like, you, out of anybody, he's a bad boy. He, you want him on your side.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's, that they said that exact line. He's the guy you want on your team. He's on your team, he's like, all right. But you also gotta know,
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, dude. He's, You got a screw loose. Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: But, beautiful docu-series, Cowboys America's Team on Netflix.
Casey G. Smith: Um, I watched this series. This had to been, I don't know if I brought it up in another episode, but it came out 2025 on HBO. I have no idea why I clicked on this little series. It's a woman, um, young lady, she's like in her 20s, looks like, and it's called I Love LA.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I Love LA. I may have, I watched that. I may have, I may have dropped that bug in your ear.
Casey G. Smith: I don't know, I was like, I was just scrolling through the, you know, the HBO stuff. I was like, what is this? I like, you know, the LA, so I was like, okay, I'll give it a try, right? I was just like, bam. Sucked in.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Same here, same here. I was like,
Casey G. Smith: I was like, why am I watching this? Why? I have no reason to be watching this. Just like, 'cause these kids are crazy. And I'm sitting there watching this. I was like, it but it does remind me of the rawness of Entourage back in the day.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's a good point. That's a good point. Uh, yeah. I, I, I could, I could,
Casey G. Smith: It's unapologetic. They're just trying to go after their dreams, however that is. And when it comes to their sexuality, same thing. They're just like, hey, we're just living this life and we're moving forward.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Very, very, it's all messy. And trying to, yeah, trying to go for their dreams and coming from different lifestyles, like, you know, one is a girl from New York, working for an agency, living with her boyfriend who's a teacher.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm, mm-hm. Yeah, that's our main character, right? My, um, she's playing Maya, yeah. Sounds right. Maya. Um, and then we have the, her client, Talulah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Talulah, who's her friend from New York, who has recently moved to LA out of the blue, who's very much so a free spirit.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, wee. Yes, she is.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes, yes. And she's a, she's a kind of an Insta model.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, yeah, um, Insta model. Yeah, it's kinda hard to like, I wouldn't say influencer.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Influencer. Yeah, there we go. She's an influencer.
Casey G. Smith: She's an influencer and uh, Maya's characters coming up with all the stuff for her.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And a thief.
Casey G. Smith: Oh yeah, that's right.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The whole handbag. Oh, man, there's some wild, there's some wild stuff in this show.
Casey G. Smith: And there's a sister in there and her name is Alani, but that's Forest Whitaker's daughter.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Really?
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's fascinating because in the show she plays a daughter of like a, a famous director.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: She's like a, a nepo baby, where she,
Casey G. Smith: Just clueless.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: And, um, her dad is played by, um, our guy who's been in everything. He has the voice. He's in Rick and Morty, right?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, he's in, uh, uh, if it's, who am I thinking of, is, is he the same guy who's, he's always like professional to a certain degree. Was he the same guy who was in Suits?
Casey G. Smith: Greenleaf.
Casey G. Smith: No, you're no, not him.
Reginald Titus Jr.: No.
Casey G. Smith: Um, so, the guy in Suits, um, he's usually more, more polished, and he can play a villain, but usually he's not a villain. He's really like kind of he kind of has the vibe of a businessman, politician. Um, and so he can kind of switch it. This guy usually plays a villain. Uh, uh, the guy, uh, that's playing her dad in this film. Very distinct voice, you'll know it, uh, as soon as you hear it. And she was like, oh, I thought that that was, I thought you were cheating on mom with her. That's the crazy woman that's been coming after me. That's the craziest woman that's been coming after me. That's the craziest woman that's been coming after me.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I, I, I forgot, I forgot the actor's face. That's why I'm, uh, oh, Keith David.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, come on. How we forget that? I was, I was buying for time. I was buying for time.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I watched this a while back. So, yeah. Yeah, but Keith David, I know Keith David.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. He's, he's, he's been working forever. Um, so he's playing, uh, uh, her, her father. And that is just hilarious. We just, we're just along with them for their weird adventures and it's, it was great.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It, it, it is a funny show that just, it sucks you in because these, these characters get into these awkward situations that, that young people get into. Sometimes they, they don't quite know what to do. Sometimes they just go for it. Fake it till they make it and, uh, yeah, it's,
Casey G. Smith: And they're like so dependent on it. The codependent. That's what it is. They're so codependent on each other. It's like, oh, man, they can't really operate without each other. Yeah. And, um, there's, there's, there's a degree of, of vanity and, and all that kind of stuff, which we all experience in our, you know, early, early years to some degree. But then you add the social media aspect, you add in the aspect of, oh, I texted this person, they haven't gotten back to me, and then you bring in whatever kind of LA vibe.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And there's, there's, there's a degree of, of vanity and, and all that kind of stuff, which we all experience in our, you know, early, early years to some degree. But then you add the social media aspect, you add in the aspect of, oh, I texted this person, they haven't gotten back to me, and then you bring in whatever kind of LA vibe. I was also gonna say just like the energy of LA, and the guy, her friend, what's his name? Charlie. Um, he's just so into the LA lingo that he forgets to be a human being. And so he meets a guy who he thinks, oh, and then he meets this Christian guy who he thinks is out the closet. He's like, no, I'm just nice, you know, basically. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, I was also gonna say just like the energy of LA, and the guy, her friend, what's his name? Charlie. Um, he's just so into the LA lingo that he forgets to be a human being. And so he meets a guy who he thinks, oh, and then he meets this Christian guy who he thinks is out the closet. He's like, no, I'm just nice, you know, basically. Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, man. Oh, man. So, but there's, there's some smart storytelling though, because even that whole, that whole arc, how that kind of wraps and the, the group, the group text thing. Like, oh, that, that's, that was good, right? Yeah, I was like, that's really smart how they, how they wrote that out. Um, but even the episode where Talulah goes to that, goes to the she goes to the party that's at Elijah Wood's house, and she meets that other influencer and they're trying to do this, this, what's supposed to be like a small little video. But they keep doing take after take and then, and then when the other two girls are upstairs and they, when they're not supposed to go upstairs, but they go upstairs, and then they meet Elijah Wood and, oh, man. Elijah Wood is nuts. He's a, he's the ca, he's the actor who's lost it. He's, he's a recluse. Yeah. And, ah, yeah, it's pretty good.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, that's good, right? That was fantastic. I bet they had fun playing that. That had to been good. That was, yeah. So anyhow, sucked. I Love LA. That, I was like, uh, what's her name? Talulah and Maya's relationship remind me of my sister and her friends' relationship. Uh, her best friend's relationship. I was like, this is hilarious. I said, you have to watch this show because this show reminds me of your friend, you and your friend. She was like, yeah. And she just binged watched. She just watched it all the way through. I was like, I don't recommend this for everybody. Right. But for quirky, raw humor, I Love LA is good. I, it was like, to the point where I was like, I'm ready for a second season. There you go. There you go. Anyhow, on HBO, I Love LA. I recommend it.

Beyond the Screen: Podcasts and Genre Exploration
Reginald Titus Jr.: All right, so this is a film that I saw trailers for last year. Didn't see it in the theaters, but I saw it pop up on my feed. And I thought, what, where did I watch this? Uh, maybe, maybe I watched it on Max, maybe on Amazon. But it's a film called Fly Me to the Moon.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Starring Channing Tatum.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Pardon me. And Scarlett Johansson. And it's in the trailer, it's, it's a film about, uh, NASA basically hiring a PR woman, basically to help sell the idea of flying to the moon to the American public.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Ooh, propaganda.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Very charming film.
Casey G. Smith: Uh-huh. It's got an old school kind of look to it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: For sure, right? It's set, set in the 60s. Maybe, maybe the, late 50s, early 60s, uh, right at the, at the height of the space race. Uh, Woody Harrelson, who again, is always acting. He's one of those guys, he is always acting.
Casey G. Smith: Stayin' busy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: He, he has a, a nice, uh, cameo, uh, yeah, cameo guest appearance, not as himself, but as a, a, a someone working for the government. There's a, a very nice twist that you, you learn about in the film that it, it, it, it impacts a lot of the film and how it kind of plays out. But you, Reginald, as, uh, one conspiracy theorist at times, I think would,
Casey G. Smith: Conspiracy theories was created by the CIA to discredit real information. All right, go ahead.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You as one who's interested,
Casey G. Smith: No, I'm just kidding.
Reginald Titus Jr.: In, in various theories,
Casey G. Smith: That's true. I ain't mad at it. Yeah, I'm a conspiracy theorist.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You would, I think you would, you, I'd be very interested to see hear your, your, your take on on the film, especially on the ending of the film.
Casey G. Smith: Ooh, I like it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes, but well done, very charming. Fly Me to the Moon. Yeah. Good performances, all that good stuff.
Casey G. Smith: Did they play the Frank Sinatra song, Fly Me to the Moon?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Most definitely. Which again, just trivia, that that song was composed by one, Quincy Jones.
Casey G. Smith: Of course. Yes, sir. Of course it was.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I, I do like that song quite a bit. They played that at the beginning of, uh, Wall Street. Right?
Casey G. Smith: Oh, I don't remember. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: The first one, the first Wall Street?
Casey G. Smith: Possibly. Because it was like a lot of big band.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. When we covered it, that's its opening up. Yeah. Fly Me. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They they were played at the beginning of that.
Casey G. Smith: Good recall. Um, okay, I'm interested. You piqued my interest. When you said conspiracy theories.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's, it's, and it's, and it's a film that you could watch with the, with the whole family. It's, it's, it moves at a pretty good clip. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Dang. I have a feeling where this is going. Um, Stanley Kubrick, any part of this? I will say no more. Okay. I will, but, it's, it's very interesting how they handle that situation. Theory. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, I watched some stand-up comedy on Netflix. There's a couple that just recently popped up. Um, Mike Epps, called Delusional. Mike Epps, he's recently been, he was on Club Shay Shay and they had a conversation. Remember they were like kind of beefing a little bit, you know, Mike Epps has jokes about him. And they were mad, they were ready to fight. It was like, nobody wants to see no old man fight. Uh, especially if they're not like trained fighters, nobody wants to see this. Uh, it would be bad. Um, they squashed that. He goes on his run doing like his PR stuff, you know, going to different podcasts. It drops a few weeks ago, I think. And it's well done. Like, so with Mike Epps, I kind of had like a, when it came to his stand-up, I've watched it, but I always felt like he wasn't all the way polished. I really felt like he has raw talent, and he just gets on stage and like, all right, I'm gonna talk about this today. You know what I mean? That's the vibe that I get, uh, from, from Mike Epps. And, um, what I've also learned with, uh, him in that interview that he did with Club Shay Shay, he's not trying to be funny. He's like, man, I'm trying to do all these jokes or something like. He's just being a real dude. I was like, and I can appreciate that because he talks about people that are always on. Always on like, and we can kind of say like Kevin Hart, somebody like that. No matter what podcast. Like, all right, I'm telling jokes today, guys. Bam, I got you. Uh, but he says you burn, anybody can get it. Um, but when, but when you do that, he was talking about, you're, you get burnt out. You get, you get burnt out, and people expect it from you and you can go crazy a little bit.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Sure.
Casey G. Smith: And so just seeing him as a real dude, but when he got on this show for Delusional, Netflix. I was like, this show from beginning to end is solid. It's like he's been like getting better. You know, it's like he's developing, he's getting better. He's grounded, married, you know, got got good stuff going on, business, real estate stuff going on. I like, this is awesome.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's always cool seeing someone evolve and improve their craft. I remember, uh, Marlon Wayans, he did a couple of comedy specials a couple years back where he was like, you know, specifically working on improving his, his comedy. So, but with Mike Epps, again, I have, I've never really like been drawn to him. But I'd be willing to check out his, uh, his show because of what you've shared.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah, and it's I was like, oh, he's there, he's getting, he's there. I was like, wow, this is interesting because other like his earlier stuff. I was like, I, he just, he's winging it. And you can tell he's winging it. Some people that have like just raw talent can do that. They can kind of get away with murder, you know what I mean? They just get by passing. I got a 70. You could have got an A. But you're gonna get the same money regardless. You're gonna, you're gonna get the same money regardless if you got the 70 or if you got the 95.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's fair.
Casey G. Smith: But when you get to 95 it, it lasts longer, you know, it's like, all right, you can appreciate it. But, um, he got an A on this one. So, I'm gonna go right into the next one because it's in contrast. So, recently, Katt Williams has dropped.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I watched that one.
Casey G. Smith: You watched it? Okay. Uh, did you really, I could,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, not his, not his best work. It was, it was, it was, it was okay. But it felt, it felt, I, I think I saw his previous one he did on Netflix. It almost felt he re, he was rehashing some things from there. Just a couple updates, but, uh, it didn't feel as good or as funny as some of his previous stuff that I'd seen. At least his previous one that I saw.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. How 'bout you?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Same.
Casey G. Smith: So, in contrast to the Mike Epps stuff, I see Mike Epps like growing and developing as a comedian. Like, to me, in contemporary comedy, I, I think top of the line is like Dave Chappelle. Like that's where I kind of hold everybody else to. It's like, okay, where are you in regards to that? You know, that's like the king, you know, it's like his peers look up to him. So, that's where I'm comparing everybody to, like, that's the standard. You know, I'm in the same age group, da da da. Um, with Katt Williams, I felt like the last two, it's like going down. It's going down. He's like kind of like got the quirks or like kind of relying on like the funny voice. And another thing, and it's like so much so it's like, and it's like a little bit unnecessarily vulgar too. I'm like, dang, what's going on here? So, in my opinion, I feel like it's kind of going down. It feels like he's winging it now.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Almost like a parody of himself.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. But when he does his interviews, they're hilarious. And so I like, I'm actually enjoying his interviews more than his stand-up. Um, but I don't know what's going on there. Uh, when it comes to his stand-up. I don't know if it's not being developed enough, if it's the wrong shoot, because Dave Chappelle, even, um, I can't remember who he was talking about, but he was helping another comedian when it comes to their, their specials, which is like 50 minutes, 60 minutes or whatever. That sometimes it you hit or miss even if you've done a recording, you sometimes don't wanna put it out because it, it's not hitting like it's supposed to. It might be cool in the audience, but watching as a viewer, um, just watching tape, it's not hitting like it's supposed to. And sometimes those tapes don't need to be, be put out. And I feel like this, it doesn't hit like it's supposed to. They're gonna laugh because it's Katt Williams live or whatever, but, um, it shouldn't be on there.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I felt that same way about Kevin Hart's previous, uh, special. I watched it and I was like, no, this just, it, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't hitting. Um, and it, you know what? Comedy is not easy. Uh, I think it's one of the most challenging professions you see in. But even when you've been in it for a while, right, you're constantly looking to refresh, and still kind of stay on brand for what, what, what you're, what you're building, but, right, man, how, how do you improve? How do you, quote unquote, stay relevant? All of it's tough.
Casey G. Smith: Absolutely.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Difficult. Yeah. And with the, with the age of, well, I mean, it's not, not really new. Before we had Netflix, right? There'd be specials on HBO and Showtime and things like that, but,
Casey G. Smith: Always.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And it's difficult to put a special together. Like, people talk about, um, how difficult it is to put a special together. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: A lot of times they'll do like two, two nights, right? Two shows and then they can kind of pick from, like, the, the, the best of of each, of each night. Oh, you're talking about like the recordings of the show? Mm-hm. Yeah, um, yeah, it's been an approach. Like, Jamie, Jamie Foxx is one of those raw talents where he can just kind of do anything. You know what I mean?
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Jamie's, Jamie's on a different level in that regard.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, he can just go and, he can just go in there raw talent and he just picks up where he left off. I think some of these other people have to continuously work at that. Um, I feel like Mike Epps has that raw talent, but he has to keep it organized and keep, you know,
Reginald Titus Jr.: I think, I think all of them have to, have to work and have a set and have an idea of what they're going to, to do and what they will perform with. I don't, I don't think anybody I used to think that before, but, man, after watching like Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, I'm like, no, they, they are constantly workshopping things, especially if they're like on the road. And, and yeah, they're, something things are, are, are still maybe in the process, but it's, I've, I've got so much respect for just that, that craft.
Casey G. Smith: That, that craft. Yeah, it's very difficult to do. It's, um, I have recently watched the episode of, uh, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. And I've seen all the episodes for the most part. Sure. Um, but it was specifically the one when he was like interviewing Steve Harvey. And that was a good one. That, that was a good one. He was sitting down and Jerry Seinfeld like specifically talks like how black people talk and like he'll like take certain words. He said, yeah, you all. I like all, no, all y'all. I like how you, how you say that. They all y'all, this, this. Steve Harvey was like, yeah, F all y'all. It's very efficient. It's not one specific person. All y'all. So, I just like how Jerry kind of like kind of breaks certain things down. And he'll take, he said, he was like, two other words that he used like from black culture to kind of like break it down. And he like kind of like enjoyed that part of black culture.
Reginald Titus Jr.: But that's, that's one of the things I enjoy, almost with, almost with any genre. I love seeing professionals from the same genre interview/interact with each other in a, in a, in a form where you can kind of just kind of be a fly on the wall, listening to them talk about the craft. The craft, yeah, with their passion about, all right, which, which reminds me, uh, of two things that I did watch on YouTube. Since you brought up some like YouTube content, I wouldn't mention this. So, I watched two interviews, uh, that were like pro wrestling related.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, one is with a guy named Cody Rhodes. He's got his own podcast. And he's been interviewing different, different wrestlers. And he had an interview with a guy named Jey Uso. I don't know if any of these names ring, ring a bell at all.
Casey G. Smith: If it's not Hulk Hogan. Oh yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, yeah. We go way back.
Casey G. Smith: Or, or The Rock. Or,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Or, Okay, okay. So,
Casey G. Smith: Or the big guy. What's the big guy? The monster big guy. 500 pounds, 400 pounds.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yokozuna. Yokozuna. Or, or giant Andre the Giant. Or, you, you're in the, the, you're in the 80s. Ric Flair. Or, uh, the buddy with the armbands, the yellow armbands. The Ultimate Warrior. Yeah, like,
Casey G. Smith: What's the What's the boo?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Okay. So, that's my era. I gotcha. So, we're in the 80s, early 90s. All right. So, in 2025, maybe even a couple of years back. They still wrestling.
Casey G. Smith: They still wrestling.
Reginald Titus Jr.: They still wrestling. Wrestlers actually, they've done some good bit. So, so, the, like the, the two, two of the biggest names in WWE, there's one guy named Cody Rhodes, he's the son of the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes. Uh, you probably would have seen him in the 80s. Dusty Rhodes was, guy who was, he looked out of shape. But, but correctly he had this like, you know, this big belly. But he would, he spoke with a list. Protection. And, and, and used a lot of black language in his talk, which made him such an interesting character to listen to. But he was also,
Casey G. Smith: Uh-huh.
Reginald Titus Jr.: If you gonna do it, do it right.
Reginald Titus Jr.: He's, he's what you call a booker in the business. In other words, he was in charge of putting together the matches.
Casey G. Smith: Uh. I see.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, okay. Yeah. So that, that's what you call it, literally, Yeah, you call that a, a booker. Um, but later on in life after he retired, he was working with WWE and he was behind the scenes helping develop talent. And WWE has a, a thing called NXT. That's where they're emerging, developing talent. They get a chance to be on TV, they got their own titles, all that kind of stuff. And a lot of WWE's main superstars right now, all NXT grads. All came up through NXT. It's, it's so awesome to see. Anyway,
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Cody Rhodes is Dusty Rhodes' son. Cody Rhodes was in WWE for a good while, had different gimmicks. Left WWE, started AEW, which is their now like the it's rival wrestling company. Um, and AEW was thriving, but then Cody left there and came back to WWE. Really, it's a really cool, I've never seen it someone leave, start their own wrestling company, leave it and come back.
Casey G. Smith: Dang.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, he, he shows up at WrestleMania here in Texas a couple of years ago. And it was like this big surprise. I didn't, I didn't know he was coming back to WWE. And just shows up, crowd goes ape. And he starts his storyline of I have to finish the journey, because the big thing is that his, his dad, who had held multiple world championships, Dusty had held, but he never held the WWE World Championship. And so there was the storyline, I gotta finish my journey. At the time, you got a guy Roman Reigns. I'm sure you heard of Roman Reigns before, right?
Casey G. Smith: Yeah.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Not even Roman Reigns?
Casey G. Smith: Man, look.
Reginald Titus Jr.: All right. So, uh, Roman Reigns, throughout COVID, Roman Reigns had the world title. He had both, there's like two world titles. WWE, there's a World Wrestling title, and a Universal title. He had them both.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And throughout like the whole pandemic, he held those titles.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Everybody he wrestled, he beat. And he had, he had a whole crew with him. He had his two cousins, Jimmy and Jey Uso, known as The Usos. Uh, they're all part of the big Samoan dynasty of wrestlers. So anyway, they, they, they form, they had a group called The Bloodline. Because they, because of their, their, their Samoan heritage and, uh, all of that. But they were dominant. Like, literally, Roman held the titles for I think almost 600 days. So we're talking years of being champ.
Casey G. Smith: Come on.
Casey G. Smith: His face, yeah, is very familiar.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, one of the longest running like heavyweight champs in a long time. And so Cody was going up against him at WrestleMania. He had to finish his story. The first year he tried to do it, he lost, he did, he didn't, he didn't get it done. Second year, went forward again, and he got it done. He got the title. He, he, he, quote unquote, finished his story. But Cody is super popular, he's super over. He's, he's, he's great with kids. Uh, he's, he's like one of the faces of WWE.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, uh, but this is a podcast. Is that what she get to?
Reginald Titus Jr.: All the, yeah, all that, all that to say is that Cody has his own podcast now. It shows up on YouTube.
Casey G. Smith: I think you brought up a podcast last time. Maybe it was a, I don't know if it was a different guy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I think it was 'cause I don't, I don't know that I mentioned.
Casey G. Smith: It was specifically a guy, business professional, but it was dealing in the wrestling business. I just don't remember the guy's name. But you're saying it was like, he's kinda stuffed together.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, that's when, maybe I was talking about John Cena, who Cody interviewed.
Casey G. Smith: John Cena, I would have, okay, but you didn't mention John Cena and, uh, when you were talking about this particular podcast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Huh. Um, 'cause I, 'cause I know who that is. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Well, I, I'll tell you this when, when Cody, like how he dresses, Cody dress, when he's not in wrestling attire, he's in suits. Like typically like three-piece suits. So,
Casey G. Smith: This might be the same guy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: This might be the same podcast. So, there was another episode I watched where Cody interviewed, uh, Jey Uso.
Casey G. Smith: Mm-hm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Jey Uso, we talk about, you know, twins. Jey Uso and his brother Jimmy, they're both twins. And when they came into wrestling, they were a tag team. And they won the championships many a time. Well, a point came where Jimmy got injured and Jey had to kinda wrestle solo. And Roman, who was the champ at the time, said, you know, Jey, you have to step up. This is part of the storyline. But his brother really was injured. And so Jey became main event Jey Uso. And he, he got better as a performer, as a worker. To now, you fast forward years later, he got so hot, so good, that they actually put the world title on him. He, he was world title for a bit. And he so, he has a thing when he comes out where he, he does this, this, this right here. And the whole crowd does it. It's like one of those phenomenal. And then they, you know, you know what you're gonna get, right? Yeah, and they, they love it so much that he'll, he'll, he'll do it. He, he comes in not through the ramp, he comes in from the aisles. Like from like the snack bar area. And he's going down, so the whole audience, you know, he'll, he'll, you know, pick up kids. And that. And like, now, everybody, he'll get into the ring. And even the announcers will get there and do it. And, and it's, it's wild. But he'll, he'll be tired by the time he's, you know, he calls it work. But, he'll stop and then he'll be like, go, go back over there. And they'll, yeah, it's, it's, it's a thing. But, so,
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, Cody's interviewing, uh, Jey. It's, it's interesting because they, they, wrestling used to be super protected. Now it's not. They will talk about all the behind the scenes stuff. Yeah, they I remember you were telling me about this in some previous episodes, how they were like unreal on WWE. But, yeah, so those are just talking about their journey and, and, and it was really good. But the, the one that I, that really stood out to me, and I'm sorry, it's been longer than I intended.
Casey G. Smith: That's funny.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The show was sponsored by WWE.
Casey G. Smith: Hey.
Reginald Titus Jr.: But Stephanie McMahon, okay. Helmsley. Uh, she's married to Triple H, aka Paul Levesque, former wrestler now kind of head of WWE creative. She's got her own podcast. And so she had Roman Reigns on there. Now, I, I, I have never seen an interview with Roman Reigns where he was just like him, himself. He's just not the character. He's a regular person. I like seeing this. Yeah, and he, 'cause he's, he's, he's protected, you know, being Roman Reigns, the tribal chief. He's protected that pretty well. But, man, in this interview, I was, I was so impressed with him just talking about his life, right? He's married, he's got kids. Just how, how important his family is to him. And, uh, how he, I knew, I knew he had had leukemia.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, wow.
Reginald Titus Jr.: But he, he overcame that. He, he played at, uh, Georgia Tech, if I'm not mistaken, in, in football. He played on the defense. He was like, pretty good. Uh, his real name is Joe. But it was just, it was just a very nice, revealing interview, and it just, it really boosted my, my, my, my respect for, uh, for him, just to kinda hearing more of his story as a, as a human. And, uh, I was, yeah, I, I, I really enjoyed it. But, yeah, um, Stephanie, Stephanie McMahon's podcast on YouTube, worth checking out. Likewise, Cody Rhodes as well. Sorry that took so long.

Reflecting on Nostalgia and Ongoing Series
Casey G. Smith: Okay, no worries. All that from a Jerry Seinfeld. 'Cause we're talking about, you know, two professionals, right? In the same craft, talking about it. Um, the Steve Harvey, I didn't expect the Steve Harvey one to be as funny as it was, but them talking to each other about it. And, uh, they were talking about, you're either funny or you're not. You know. Um, and then Steve Harvey was saying the same thing. I was like, that's what I'm saying, man. And then Steve was talking about how he, uh, was like teaching a class. Yeah, I got to teach a class about this, this and that. And then Jerry Seinfeld was like, I would never do that. The very fact that you're here is, it's over. You know. And then Steve was saying the same thing. I would never take a class. The fact that you're here, says it all. It's funny when Jerry can like play, like he has room to kind of hit his, his beats. Uh, and Steve Harvey can kind of give him that, but
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's very, very much so what Jerry think to say.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And, and they're, they're constantly workshopping stuff with each other. This is what you can tell you like, okay, you're, you're working on something. And then they're saying, I can get my fellow comedian to laugh at this. Yes. All right, this is something I can use later on. Um, but when you, and you it's very different when he's interviewing other people, you know, he doesn't kind of, sometimes he doesn't vibe with the people like, you know, with the Kevin Hart one, he's like, he's like a cartoon. And then, you know, then with the one with Dave Chappelle, I felt like Dave Chappelle was just tired. He was like, I was like, okay, man. You were barely there. So, it was like hit or miss. Um, but anyhow, that, yeah, that was one I had recently just, just watched a couple episodes. I wasn't gonna watch them all.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah.
