About Filmmaker Commentary

Filmmaker Commentary is a platform built on a simple idea: the real lessons of filmmaking are often hidden in the commentary tracks.

Originally found on DVDs and Blu-rays, director and crew commentaries offer something most film content overlooks — direct insight from the people who actually made the film. Filmmaker Commentary takes those insights and translates them into something practical: a deeper understanding of filmmaking that can be applied to your own work.

This is not about surface-level discussion. This is about extracting knowledge from the source and using it to sharpen your eye, your instincts, and your execution as a filmmaker.

The Origin

Filmmaker Commentary began in 2013 as a personal research project created by Reginald Titus Jr.

At the time, the goal was not to build a platform — it was to document a process. While studying director commentaries, Reginald began taking notes as a way to better understand how films were constructed. What started as a private system for learning quickly revealed something more: these commentary tracks were not just supplemental — they were a blueprint.

They offered real-world insight into directing decisions, on-set problem solving, performance choices, and the creative intent behind key moments. What began as note-taking evolved into a podcast — a way to document, organize, and share those discoveries.

The Evolution

As the project developed, one thing became clear: watching films this way changes how you see them.

Through the consistent study of commentary tracks, Filmmaker Commentary became a tool for developing a sharper filmmaking eye — one that pays attention to detail, performance, and the invisible work behind the camera.

The process did not just improve technical awareness. It also refined communication, perspective, and the ability to break down complex creative decisions in a clear and structured way.

The Collaboration

Filmmaker Commentary also became a collaborative effort with Casey G. Smith, a long-time friend, recurring co-host, and producer on Natural Hair the Movie.

In the early stages, the podcast was a solo exploration — just Reginald studying and reacting to commentary tracks. That changed when Casey joined as a guest on Episode 5, covering Cabin Fever.

From that point forward, the dynamic shifted. Casey brought a complementary perspective rooted in production experience, helping expand the conversation beyond observation into deeper analysis. Over time, he became a recurring co-host and a key part of the platform’s growth.

Together, the discussions evolved into something more structured — not just reacting to films, but breaking them down with intention.

About Reginald Titus Jr.

Filmmaker Commentary is led by Reginald Titus Jr., a filmmaker, director, and media creator with a foundation in both narrative and real-world production.

As the director of Natural Hair the Movie, Reginald brings firsthand filmmaking experience into every analysis. His perspective is grounded in execution — understanding not just what works on screen, but what it takes to make it work behind the scenes.

In addition to narrative filmmaking, his background includes producing music videos, video production for large-scale organizations including mega churches, and nonprofit work, including projects with Special Olympics Texas.

He has also spent over a decade in production, shooting more than 150 weddings — an experience that sharpened his instincts in cinematography, editing, and storytelling under real-world conditions.

That range of experience informs the foundation of Filmmaker Commentary: film analysis built from doing the work, not just watching it.

The goal is to build a space where filmmakers can sharpen their craft, film lovers can deepen their understanding, and the conversation around film moves beyond opinion into insight.

At its core, Filmmaker Commentary is about one thing:
