Reginald Titus Jr.: I'm tripping. My brain is everywhere, dude.
Casey G. Smith: It's all good. Take a breath.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I was talking to Shanti today. I said, I talked to kids so much during the day, I said, I probably sound remedial to adults. I was like, laundromat. And then she started laughing. I was. So, every now and then my boy Jason will say, yeah, you know what I'm saying, I'm something, you know, potty, whatever, go to the potty. I've heard adults do that from time to time. I'm going to go to the potty. I mean, the bathroom. I'm going to go to the bathroom. I got it. The potty, he said potty, yes. I love it. He kind of just slid, he slipped out.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. I get it. You got to talk in the two worlds.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I understand.
Casey G. Smith: What was that one movie or a show where a lady was on a date with somebody and she was like a mom, and she like, when the food came out, she just reached over his plate and started cutting up his. And then she's like, oh my God, I'm so sorry. I'm just so used to it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Welcome to Filmmaker Commentary. I'm Reginald Titus Jr. I'm joined with Casey G. Smith. Welcome back, sir.
Casey G. Smith: Good to be back, sir.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And today we're talking about Basic Instinct, directed by Paul Verhoeven, and we have the music by Jerry Goldsmith with the original score. This was 1992. We have a budget of...
Casey G. Smith: 49 million dollars.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And how did it perform at the box office?
Casey G. Smith: Uh, opening weekend of 15 million, a US and Canadian gross or domestic gross of 117.7 million, but a uh a total worldwide gross of 352.9 million dollars.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wow. Wow.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, it was the highest grossing film of of that year.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Nice. It has a kind of like that European flavor to it, that artistic thing. And then, you know, being um uh directed that's not from America, you know, bringing that taste. That's uh interesting. And it yeah, we'll get into it, but it faced some uh some backlash.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. Good old Basic Instinct. Uh, but before we dive further into Basic Instinct, let's talk about News and Movies Watched.
Casey G. Smith: All right, so in the news, we have the the tragic sudden and unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman. Of course, he is best known for playing the role of of Black Panther. And so we here on Filmmaker Commentary, we just wanted to take a a a moment and and just recognize this uh wonderful uh young talent uh gone too soon at the age of only 43.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wow.
Casey G. Smith: So a little bit about uh about Chadwick and I'm I'm I'm taking uh some snippets off of biography.com in case you want to read his his full bio. But uh Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born in 1976 in South Carolina. He attended Howard University in Washington D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. Ha ha.
Casey G. Smith: Was it? I thought it was Howard.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, Howard University.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, it sounded like you said Harvard.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, I'm sorry. I yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Howard University in Washington D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing. Uh he then attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. He did a lot of stage play work and he actually uh worked as part of the Hip Hop Theater Festival and has written the plays, Hieroglyphic Graffiti, Deep Azure, and Rhyme Deferred. Additionally, he has directed a number of stage productions as well as the short film Blood Over a Broken Pond.
Casey G. Smith: He had some uh early starring roles on TV. Again, you can go back and read those. Um started a couple of films, had a couple of appearances on some some NBC shows, a couple of soap operas, but of course his breakout role, when we really began to recognize his name, obviously was playing Jackie Robinson in 42.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Mhm.
Casey G. Smith: Reginald, did you see 42?
Reginald Titus Jr.: I did not.
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Uh, yeah, worthwhile, worthwhile checking out. And when you just see like his his dedication to the the role in playing Jackie Robinson, you could you could see then that there was something there, something special uh about about this actor. Um, then of course next, you know, playing the role of The Godfather himself. Yeah. James Brown in Get On Up. And this this might be a maybe his most impressive role.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Really?
Casey G. Smith: Just the all around for, I mean, to play James Brown, uh who from a performance standpoint is one of the greatest performers of all time. To have to take on his moves and then you're you're also trying to sing, that is that is that's that, that's something else. And um, yeah, he went for it.
Casey G. Smith: Um, and of course, around that time, a little bit after that, then uh he was also also shot the film uh Thurgood.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's right. Yep. Thurgood. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: And so already, you know, tackling uh roles of iconic Americans, specifically African Americans, who were who were pioneers and groundbreaking in terms of what they did for their industries and even for the black community as a whole. These men, these own guards were heroes, not perfect, but they were heroes nonetheless. Yes. And then, of course, he got cast into the MCU in the role of T'Challa, the Black Panther, first appearing in Captain America Civil War, where he absolutely stole the show. It's true. Stole the show in that film. And then went on to star in Black Panther, the 2018 release that set the world on fire. That film was a movement.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It was. It was.
Casey G. Smith: You and I and and your son, we we went to the theater to see it and there was man, there was something in the air. There was an energy about that film. There was a a pride about that film and there were people of all backgrounds, nationalities, and colors, but to see a film with a black director, a predominantly black cast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And co-lead. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Uh, that went on to win multiple Academy Awards. Wow. And then Chadwick there at the center holding it down as as T'Challa was just it it was a cultural touchstone and it is the most successful single Marvel superhero film as far as a single character, I mean, a Marvel film that's not named Avengers basically.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Pretty much. Yeah. Which is a big deal because you had people that were I think a lot of Marvel people come back more than once, but just collectively people that never even watched the Marvel films coming out to watch the film more than once is interesting.
Casey G. Smith: Totally. My my mom went to the, my mom doesn't go to the theater. I said, Mom, you got to go see this movie. This is important for the culture.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like going out to vote basically.
Casey G. Smith: Vote for the culture. Exactly. Right. Exactly. I was like, we want more of this, we vote with our dollars. And she went out, took my, she went out, saw it, and she she enjoyed it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: I was like, all right. But 1.3 billion at the global box office. That's right. That's right. So also continuing to smash the misnomer of people in Hollywood saying for a while, oh, you know, black films, you know, don't don't carry, you know, well internationally.
Reginald Titus Jr.: They can no longer lie to us basically.
Casey G. Smith: Exactly. So, um, after of course, Black Panther, then he was then in Infinity War and then of course in Avengers End Game. And obviously we all were excited and looking forward to him returning as Black Panther. He also had the the film uh 21 Bridges that came out.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Um, and also he was in The Five Bloods, the Spike Lee film.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Most recently.
Casey G. Smith: Most recently, right. And of course, there was a a social media post that that had gone up with him and where he looked thin and and some fans showed concern. Uh when I I saw the post and I I thought it was just him preparing for the role after I'd seen the movie The Five Bloods. And uh unfortunately it was far more serious than we realized. And um August 28th of 2020, um his his family put up a a post and said it it is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Uh Chadwick was diagnosed diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it the last four years that it progressed to stage four. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all. Uh yeah, he brought films to Um, mhm mhm mhm. Is he in a new film that that's coming out? Um that's kind of talking about civil rights. Is there another film he's he's in that's about to hit theaters?
Casey G. Smith: Yes, so, um from The Five Bloods, uh August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more, uh all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. Lord. Uh it is with honor, excuse me, it was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home with his wife and family by his side.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Amen. That's the way to bounce, man. You know, with the family, it's my my cousin bounce, you know, just family around and it's time to let let the ghost go. But man, he left left behind a good legacy, man. That we can be proud of. You can got some some positive images, um that you can go and and feel empowered, you know, I I know, you know, when we released our film, like it was literally like two weeks after Black Panther came out and kind of just felt like we were kind of part of it. And it was it was you that suggested we not drop our film the same week as Black Panther.
Casey G. Smith: Absolutely, absolutely. I was like, no.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Good good call.
Casey G. Smith: No. We ride the wave. Yes. We ride the wave cuz people are going to be feeling it. And yeah. Um, thank y'all for for for listening. Cool.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: But here at Filmmaker Commentary, again, I I I echo Reginald's sentiments. Um, an amazing legacy from an actor who I believe, man, had had so much more uh I think, excuse me, an amazing talent and human being who I believe had so much more to give. I I have no doubt he would have gone on to direct uh some some amazing films in the future.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, for sure. For sure.
Casey G. Smith: Uh cuz he he was just he just came across as a consummate professional. Um, you know, he he carried himself with with an air of of of regalness, but at the same time, you know, like just down to Earth, just man, I I I'm not going to lie, man, like uh this this one was was a heartbreaker in in the midst of all that's taken place in 2020.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. 2020 has been a hell of a year.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, it has. Yes, it has.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like we just can't take blow after blow. It's just like, all right, mercy.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Goodness. Uh, but but Chadwick, uh our condolences to to your your family. Um and to to all the fans out there, you know, I mean, Black Panther brought us all together, regardless of where you were from. I think it it brought the world together. And and it's a testament to the progress that that we can make uh to the respect that we can give to all people, regardless of where they're from. So, you know, as we take the time to to remember uh Chadwick's memory and his his legacy and now that he now that he lies uh amongst the Pantheon uh Pantheon of of great heroes that he portrayed now as one of them. Um, may we all look to uh treat each other with a little more respect and dignity and and push push through and persevere like he did.
Reginald Titus Jr.: True. Um, just to kind of add to it, when he was at Howard, um going to the I think it was to the Oxford education, what I didn't know is Felicia Rashad was his teacher. And he couldn't afford to go to the out of uh the out of country uh university.
Casey G. Smith: Study abroad.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And so he, she found somebody to pay his way. Felicia Rashad, you know, was a teacher. Shout out. Turns out that it was Denzel Washington that paid his way to the thing.
Casey G. Smith: See, I thought it was just a general scholarship that he that he had put money into. I didn't know he had directly funded Chadwick.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. And but, you know, I don't know if that's direct, you know, from Felicia Rashad, kind of orchestrating that. You know what I mean? Cuz I I didn't I didn't even know, you know, she was teaching at Howard. So I'm just like, whoa.
Casey G. Smith: Right.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The one Howard is, you know, the spot. Uh almost went there for for law school. You know, there was yeah, there was a point in time where I was like trying to make that decision because it was like, so I was looking at schools that will be the least amount of money to pay, but push out people that make the most money. And it was Howard University, mainly because you're there, you're watching. You know, you that the connection and you're in DC.
Casey G. Smith: Connection and location. Yes, yes, sir. Location, location, location.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And so almost went there, but after talking to some, you know, a friend about it, I decided that path was not, the legal path was not for me.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The lifestyle, the lifestyle what it takes.
Casey G. Smith: Gotcha.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The lifestyle, it's hard on a lot of families.
Casey G. Smith: Gotcha.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Um,
Casey G. Smith: There's wisdom in counsel, right?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes, sir. But we just wanted to take a moment to Yeah, so just oh, uh I say that to say uh Denzel Washington, he was kind of talking about uh Chadwick Boseman. He's like, man, these guys, you know, cuz Chadwick Boseman, it was a speech where he was just talking about, you know, if it wasn't for these guys, we wouldn't be where we're at. And then Denzel Washington, you know, I just did a little, you know, a little just a little bit, you know, to kind of everything else is all him, you know, I just did a little bit. But um, when I he said, when I look at Black Panther, it's like, oh he said, oh, these guys are they're leading the way. This is the new wave, you know, so to get that that mutual respect, but at the same time, you know, seeing Denzel Washington watch Chadwick Boseman saying this like, you got tears in his eyes like, whoa. And, you know, Denzel usually, you know, don't cry and something, but it's when you've been through a certain experience, you know, when you're a certain age and you get that respect, but at the same time, you see how far the medium has gone.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Exactly.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You know.
Casey G. Smith: He cried, and I know uh uh uh Dick Gregory, he said, um uh uh what movie was that, Django, you know, meant something for him because it was a, you know, they didn't let black men get on horses or, you know, that that was
Reginald Titus Jr.: That imagery.
Casey G. Smith: Wasn't available. So it was like, they kind of understand it. Anyhow, yes, he left behind a good legacy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: He did. He did. So salute to you.
Casey G. Smith: Salute. Chadwick. King. Rest in peace.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Forever.

Movies Watched - "Don't F**k with Cats" & "New Mutants"
Casey G. Smith: How about movies watched?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes.
Casey G. Smith: So let's jump into Don't F**k with the Cats.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Okay. How about that? You made that recommendation.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, yes, yes. Uh, I I I literally just finished watching the third episode before uh we jumped in. And so if you haven't seen Don't Watch the Cats, it's a a mini docu-series on Netflix. And uh we're going to talk about it, so there may be spoilers.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, yeah. There will be spoilers for sure.
Casey G. Smith: So, you might want to jump ahead maybe about like six, seven minutes or so, but we jumping in.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. So what do you think?
Casey G. Smith: What the hell? I'm going.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I I had no idea this thing was out there. I knew nothing about any of this. This is my first time hearing, seeing any of it. But um, really well done, really effective, and at the last 10 minutes have this impressive cinematic quality to it. The way they they the way they hearken back like a almost like a um uh what I'm thinking of uh uh M. Night Shyamalan, almost like the end of Unbreakable. Oh, like the reveal, yeah. Yeah, bam, bam, and cut, you know, to the things that they build up and like oh oh oh. Oh. Yes. Yeah, man. And then all the Basic Instinct time like, what in the world? So Don't F with the Cats is about um some crazy kid that's on the internet creating these horrific videos of murdering cats. It starts It starts off.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's how it starts off.
Casey G. Smith: Right. A uh yeah, a group of people, well, people on Facebook see yeah, a two cats get killed by being like vacuum suction into a a bag and suffocated basically. And it starts this group to form that initially has thousands of people and they're trying to find this guy and they're trying to find hints and clues and then eventually another video pops up of a cat being killed fed to a python. Yeah. And a a core group of them just they they literally start just breaking down and examining every aspect of this video, just trying to find clues. The the the wall sockets, the posters, the this, the that to track down the location of where this person is and any identity. And they eventually do, which is pretty impressive, actually. Um, but at the same time, this person also realizes he's being watched and ultimately that's what that's what he wants. Um, and but it's showing the tendencies of a psychopath. Um, and typically, they say a lot of times with psychopaths it starts with animals and eventually graduates to people. And that's what happens. And just seeing this unfold and that these videos have been yeah, are being put up there and sent and people are watching it. And you find out this guy who's like a model. Yep. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wants to be like some social influencer, slash model, reality, I don't know.
Casey G. Smith: Slash actor, psycho. But he wants all the smoke. He wants all the fame and and eventually he graduates to get to murdering an actual human being, like butchering someone. And they figure out um that he's in based on upon an image that's taken, they figure out the street and because of a gas station and they figure out that he's in Toronto. And oh man, it's just just it's just insane what ensues from there. They try to contact the police, the police are non-responsive to them, but they eventually do discover the a guy discovers the body in a suitcase that's locked and then the police finally get involved and they see what's happening and they see the video and uh that begins the manhunt basically. Lord. And they eventually track him down as he gets to Florida cuz he he wants the he's a big fan of Catch Me If You Can, the Leonardo DiCaprio film. And loves to leave breadcrumbs, wants to be tracked, but damn is he smart, man. The way he sets this up. Wow. And then the way this documentary runs, like it gets you doubting for like, oh wait a minute, maybe he maybe Manny Lopez is the one that's Cuz even he makes claims that someone named Manny Lopez has been abusing him and and leading him on, and they even go to his mom, you know, they interview his mom and she's like, those those animal those animal lover people, they're just terrible, you know. She's she's just got the blinders of a mother on, you know, and wants to believe the best of her of her son. Um, but man, when like when you when you get to the end of this thing. Yes. Um, and this this is going to lead into our talking about Basic Instinct. When you get to the end and you see that this guy is is doing things beat for beat. He has multiple aliases. Yep. Uh, one being uh C. Trenell. Oh wait, Trammel. C.
Reginald Titus Jr.: This has been a while since I've seen it so I don't have some of the details aren't in my brain anymore.
Casey G. Smith: One of his aliases is an alias by the name of uh yeah, C. Trammel. Um, which, you know, one of his favorite movies. He literally, like his mom keeps a keychain, like a that he that he used to have, of from Basic Instinct. Sharon Stone's character in that film is called Catherine Trammel. So, C. Trammel. Um, wow. And then when he when he's when he's in the like when they they they've caught him, he's in the interrogation room and he asked he he he's like being real shy and coy and people are like, can this be the guy? Can this be the killer? And he's he's like, oh can I'm cold. Can I have a a a a blanket or something to put on? And they give him that and then he asked for a cigarette. You know, and he crosses his legs, whatever. And you don't really think anything like, okay, wow, this guy's just acting like a real, you know, wimp or whatever. Like, okay, maybe there's something true about this Manny guy, but then all of a sudden like, you know, they begin to draw the clues together, okay, the alias of C. Trammel and then they keep he keeps saying that it's a guy named Manny, Manny Vasquez, the one that did this thing to him. Again, in the movie Basic Instinct, spoiler alert. In the movie Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone's, you know, person that she's engaged to, was engaged to, as Catherine Trammel, was a boxer by the name of Manny Vasquez. And then you find out this is just a a cover-up that he had created. He had been going to lawyers and filing reports about this guy abusing him and and making pictures. I mean, just elaborate scheme. Yeah, I come back to the quote that I'll I'll use later on. He's dangerous or evil, but brilliant.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, so amazing recommendation, I must say. I was like,
Reginald Titus Jr.: I've redeemed myself from Money Heist.
Casey G. Smith: I was like, wow. I I I'm not knocking Money Heist, I'm just saying it's not my cup of tea. But the world the world says otherwise, so kudos to the world, I'm just, it's not you, it's me. Blah blah blah blah blah. But this, this was this was impressive. Oh, yes, it is crazy. Yeah. I'm going to I'm going to recommend it to some people for sure, man.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's crazy.
Casey G. Smith: When they did the montage and they cut it against Basic Instinct and showing him doing that, I was like, my man, that had at the time I had I'm familiar with certain scenes in Basic Instinct, haven't seen the whole thing so at the time. And so like now that I've seen it, I was like, oh. Bro.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Haunting.
Casey G. Smith: Haunting, man. Cuz again, I finished Basic Instinct and the commentary, and then I watched this last. I had I had I had I had a half.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Like dessert. Yeah. Something like that. Something like that. I was like, what? Man, it's kind of terrifying, man, honestly. Yes, yes. For me, what have I watched? Recently, I never really had like an animation TV show that I just consistently watch or anything like that. This shows that I check every now and then like Family Guy or every now and then Simpsons or something like that, but nothing where I'm just really, really into these days. Um, a lot of people have been talking about Rick and Morty forever, for years. You know, podcasts is randomly out here, periodically. And had nothing to do. I think this was Saturday or Friday. I can't remember what day it was. But I was just like, you know what? It it was Saturday morning. Uh cuz Shanti was dropping the kids off. So I was like, no one's here. Let's push play on Rick and Morty. Blown away. Pilot. I I was just sucked in. I so much so that I even brought my wife. I said, you got to check this out. And it's smart. She enjoys it. It gives us stuff to talk about. There's pop culture. There's a little bit of everything. So, uh Rick and Morty, man. I'm on the second season right now.
Casey G. Smith: I've been you a time or two on this podcast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You probably did. Just throwing that out there.
Casey G. Smith: And the reason why I got into it a couple years back was because again, at my job, I'm speaking to high school students and they constantly were wearing T-shirts and I'd ask, what's your favorite animated, you know, show? And they would often say, I I hear Rick and Morty. Like, every other, I'm like, huh, okay. And so finally I I decided to check it out myself and I was like, dude, this is It's so gross, but this is so awesome. You're right. It is smart and oh man. Yeah. I'm I'm so glad you had a chance to to jump into it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I'm in the world now. Hey, Rick and Morty. Yeah, it is quite good. I don't know, Rick. So,
Casey G. Smith: Come on, Morty. Get get what what are you doing? Come on, let's go. Oh boy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, oh man, that's gross. Yeah, Morty is like the most nervous, like teenager ever. So yeah, so that's that's Get it from his dad, though. Yeah. I don't know. What what I can't even do with it. Like, wait a minute, Rick. He's just just walk all over that guy. So, yeah, Rick and Morty, man, that's um that's where we're at, season, yeah, season two, episode two, that's where we're at right now. Um, one more thing I'll mention. I saw kinda saw The New Mutants, the uh previous Fox film, now it's under the the label of uh 20 21st Century Films. The rebranding. 21st Century Films. They just erased him. Pretty much. Never happened. 21st Century Films. And I saw it I saw it a drive-in. It's my first time at a drive-in. And unfortunately, uh it wasn't dark enough, cuz the film is very dark. It wasn't dark enough outside, too much light pollution, and there was a concert thing happening on another screen adjacent to ours. That could be a problem. Total problem. I could I mean, literally, could barely make out the film. Um, not a good experience. And while watching is when I found out about the passing of Chadwick. So it just kind of marred It's been a rough weekend. Yeah, it's bad. That was a that was a not a good Friday. So I I want to watch it again. I'll I'll wait till it comes out on, you know, I think it's going to I think because of streaming rights, and this is why Disney made sure they release in the theaters, because it's going to it's going to go to HBO Max first. That's why they didn't just release it streaming wise because it wouldn't go to Disney Plus. It's going to go to HBO Max first. So, I'll have to uh I'll check it out there. But um, but no, I from what I saw, I I I I enjoyed it. I'm I'm I'm familiar with The New Mutants and uh you know, they made they definitely made some big changes. I know the creator, one of the creators of the uh of that team, man, was really not happy with it. They even spelled his name wrong in the in the in the credits. Oh, man. Was that on purpose or? No. So it's somebody else's oversight, but he yeah, he went he he went in on them. So, but yeah, the Mutants. Unbelievable. Um, I don't think I've seen anything else. I know I've recently seen an interview on YouTube from a wrestler called New Jack. It's on Vlad TV. Just a random interview. I don't know how I got on my timeline. But I looked at his face, his guy's forehead looks mangled. It looks like someone pulled a chunk of forehead off and then threw it back on backwards. Like, that's what his forehead looks like right now. And I'm just like, man, this is an interesting looking character cuz he's in a suit. He's got like these staples or something over his eyebrows. I like this guy, um, but he's talking about how, what's the line that I I sent to you? Um, he he was talking about Vince McMahon and if somebody else dies in the ring or something, you know, it's their fault. Something something about somebody people dying in the ring. So I was like, you know what, I remember you talking about people dying in the ring, wrestling, and so I just kind of want to talk about it. But anyhow, watched his interview and I had no idea how horrific the wrestling industry is. You know, I'm saw some things, you know, heard some things from more like kind of like spiritual stuff and all that. Uh, but had no idea. And um, yeah, but anyhow, this interview is very entertaining. This guy is candid like nobody else. He is a great interview. And he from what I read in the comments, he's kind of toned down compared to how his character is.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. New Jack is uh an independent wrestler who at one time actually was a bounty hunter, if I'm not mistaken.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, for 10 years.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, and is yeah, 100% certifiable. He's crazy. And I've I've I've known about him since the late '90s in in the uh Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion. He was a guy you would bring out on pay-per-views, and if you were in the audience, you probably stood back 10 feet because this guy was diving off balconies. I mean, you could just you could just put in a highlight reel of New Jack and you will see some of the craziest stuff. I mean, the bumps, bumps is basically when you you you hit the you hit the mat or the floor, uh that's called a bump. And there's all kinds of ways to do that. I mean, this guy, I mean, literally, in in civic centers, like jumping off the the balcony onto somebody through a table, cuz his finisher was only a diving headbutt. He would do it from almost
Reginald Titus Jr.: A diving headbutt. That makes sense why his forehead is tore up.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, yeah, he's yeah, something else. But yeah, if you get a chance to, I mentioned this to you, the the Dark Side of Wrestling, the uh Chris Jericho produced series, they go in, they've a whole episode on New Jack, about 45 minutes. Yeah. And it'll show you all the footage and yeah, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, I've seen a couple just a couple of minutes. I'm just like, this is disgusting. I'm going to have to come back later. I'm eating lunch.
Casey G. Smith: That's his that's his style. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Especially when it's like, you know, he has a reputation for hurting people on purpose and, you know, trying to murder people in the ring. Uh when you see this on footage this happening on footage, you kind of like, uh, it's kind of It's cringe-worthy. Yeah. And again, he he is the exception. Like New Jack is the exception. All the other wrestlers that I've seen, like, you know, it's, you know, it's uh, they're above board. Exactly. You know, it's entertainment. But yeah, New Jack uh he crosses he has crossed the line uh more than one occasion. That's why he's not in a he'll not in a WWE or something like that. Like he's the indie circuit and that's that's where you should be. So,
Reginald Titus Jr.: You know where you belong.
Casey G. Smith: Mhm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Unbelievable. But yeah, that was all for me for like TVs and movies.
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Yeah, I've I've been doing a lot of uh again just read different things. Again, I've been, you know, on some comic books and just uh, you know, I'm been getting set for this uh new Avengers game, uh Marvel's Avengers. This thing's about to drop, literally as the recording of this show. Uh it's actually dropped in some parts of the world. Uh to give you an idea. this thing this game's going to be pretty big. Uh when they did the beta over the past three weekends, they had about 6 million people play the beta. So, uh yeah, they're going to they're probably going to move some units on this thing.

Basic Instinct: The Film & Commentary
Reginald Titus Jr.: And let's jump back to the show. Thank you for tuning in to Filmmaker Commentary. We're talking about Basic Instinct, 1992, directed by Paul Verhoeven. Original score by Jerry Goldsmith. And if I'm not mistaken, this one actually, they uh they were nominated for an Oscar for Best Film Editing, and they're nominated for Best Music Original Score. Both nominations.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, they were. That is correct.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Let's jump into the synopsis.
Reginald Titus Jr.: A violent police detective investigates a brutal murder that might involve a manipulative and seductive novelist. Basic Instinct. And if this is your first time listening to Filmmaker Commentary, please know that there will be spoilers. You've been forewarned.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, how did you watch this film back in the day and currently? Cuz this came out in 1992. This is a little dated.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, so I first watched this, I may have, see if it's 92, I was 12. Uh I watched this at home. Um it was on video and VHS. And it was probably during the summer, and just found it and and watched it. I saw it. So I I may have been I was probably in junior high. Uh and watched it. And even then, you know, of course, you know that the you know, the sex and all that, you're like, whoa, wow. But I remember watching it and remembering the story. I was like, whoa. It was like, I I was I was into stuff that, you know, that would make you think. I I could appreciate that. And uh I was, I mean, I was impressed. I was impressed with the film, even even then. Um, but I hadn't watched it since then, honestly. I hadn't gone back and watched it since then. So it was cool to come back to it now and just again, still being able to appreciate it all the more. I'm I like Neo Noir uh films. Uh you know, L.A. Confidential and you know, there's there's others that kind of take that that route. But uh but yeah, I appreciate the Neo Noir genre, so, yeah. How about you?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Um, I'm familiar with the iconic scene of the, you know, smoking the cigarette, being interrogated. That was all in pop culture in the '90s. Um, and then, yeah, that one, and then the intro scene, you know, got the ice pick killing the guy. He's like, whoa, okay. Uh but I've never seen the movie all the way through, you know, cuz we already know this girl is a killer, you know, it's already been given away. Everybody kind of knows what it is. So, outside of that, never really had interest to watch it, you know. I was a younger kid, but um, going back, looking at it now, this is my first time watching it all the way through. Watched it with the wife, and uh I said, this is your kind of film, and I I played it, and then like that first scene, because the first scene is just, it's the title sequence and it's like fuzzy, then it starts getting into focus, and we see, oh, there's somebody they're having sex. And it's very explicit. And then out of nowhere, I know this was coming, but my wife doesn't know that scene is coming. And so, while while our main character's riding her her partner, she reaches for that ice pick out of nowhere, and it's like a post, she like poses for a second like, like a quarterback, like going back and then, and then I I was like, uh why did she do that? Uh it was great seeing somebody see that for the first time. I was like, got your attention. So she scoots up to watch it even more.
Casey G. Smith: Why why why is the murder?
Reginald Titus Jr.: She was not expecting that. She was
Casey G. Smith: Oh, that's awesome. That's that's that's awesome. So she didn't know anything about, oh, that's great. That is great. Oh, man. I'm so great that man, that she gets his first time experiences. Man, that's that's awesome. Yes. That is awesome. So that was hilarious. So I watched that, you know, that was just the other day, so it's a long film. So,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Kind of.
Casey G. Smith: Two hours, right, at the two-hour mark.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, it was like right there, right.
Casey G. Smith: Hour one hour, 27 minutes. So, yeah, yeah, two hours and seven minutes.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Cuz they're just talking, you know, we'll talk about it a little bit later, but uh there yeah, there's talk. So that's how I watched the film this time. Uh what did you like uh what did you like or not like about the film?
Casey G. Smith: Um, I mean to me it it moves it moves quickly. cuz there's all you know, you're going from one one thing to the next. It's like continual. I love I love I love Sharon Stone's performance and Michael Douglas. Man, they are they are on their game. Yeah, they are committed. They are on their game. They are fearless in this film. But Sharon Stone is on, she's on another level. I mean, but it takes it takes somebody to be able to play play off of. Michael Douglas always has this kind of dangerous aspect to him. And I've and I'd grown up watching him in in movies like The Romance of the Stone.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Commited. Even Fatal Attraction.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, yeah. You know, but I I I've still never seen Fatal Attraction, you know. But I remember Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, like him and um Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner, like those were some of my favorite films going up as a kid, and then seeing him, you know, in this, like he's just such an edge that's there. And then Sharon Stone, man, she is just on fire.
Reginald Titus Jr.: She's on fire. Oh my God.
Casey G. Smith: Oh my God, she's on fire. I mean, she's I mean, she's she's got she's got everything, right? She's got the brain, she's got the looks, but she is absolutely maniacal. And to watch her slowly take over. Um, and to watch her control every situation she walks into, and just, I mean, the absolute mastermind. It's I I think I I I don't I'd have to look back to see what else came out in 92, but I'm like, why wasn't she nominated? Like, how could she not be nominated for this performance? Cuz she is a boss. She is an absolute boss. And and here's one thing I don't know if you caught in on the uh DVD, when you go through the special menus, if you um hit to the right on the ice pick on the on the first uh on the main menu, it will it will show you her audition tape. It give you like five minutes of audition tape. And then it'll show if you go when you on the next special menu, it'll give you the other uh young lady's uh the other uh co-actress, uh Janine Triplehorn, uh it'll give you her audition that uh that she did. It um, oh, by the way, um, I was going to buy the film, drove to Movie Trading Company in in Irving, Texas, they had the DVD, but I was looking for the Blu-ray. They said, our other location have it. So I drove to Arlington, went to that location. They didn't have the Blu-ray. They had the DVD. And then I was like, you know what, okay, I'm going to drive to Kimwell. So I'm driving to the Kimwell location. Found, they they said they had it in stock. I didn't see it. Got the uh DVD and it has a little ice pick in the actual case. And I was like, I want to I was like a little like a I'm a kid. I'm just like, look at I was like, I kind of wanted this this is pretty dope, you know, just to just to display and everything. But I said, let me double check to see if they got the Blu-ray. So I asked the guy, he went and looked and it was hiding. The Blu-ray was hiding in between another one. So I was like, ice pick, HD, Blu-ray, ice pick, no, I went with the Blu-ray. So, of course.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Filmaker. Yeah. I'm a filmmaker.
Casey G. Smith: But it was a good little selling point. Yeah. He just hit me with your propaganda. It almost worked. I was like, cuz I just like the way it looked. I was like, wow, this is cool. So I I had gotten the Blu-ray, for whatever reason, it wouldn't play for me. I just I went back and had to get the DVD. Um, and it was the it was the one that came in the case that was supposed to have the ice pick, but whoever had it before, cuz you know, it's used, they clearly had taken the ice pick. Um, so it's just a DVD. Just a DVD. Not even the fringes. No high definition. No, you know, no memorabilia, just just a DVD. Just the facts, ma'am, just the facts. Right. So, yeah, um, yeah, yeah, I had to throw that in there. Um, what did I like? Um, I enjoyed um, the cinematic language, looking at the beautiful people, the rawness. Um, to me, honestly, when I looked at it, I was like, this is a porno. Like it was. I was like, this should be rated X. At least NC 17. Like, I don't know how they got away with this, honestly. I was like, Well, consider that what we're watching is the unrated version. I watched it on Showtime first. It's still I'm positive that that version. Yeah, it's it like I think they've just stopped calling it unrated and just they just they just played it, yeah. Because and in the commentary they talk about like when he uh when he goes down on her, like that Like the shot is like that, like that yeah, that's that's not in the uh in the original theatrical. Okay. So, I think now now audience have changed so much. It's like, that's but the unrated. This is nothing. Yeah, no big deal to them. So, yeah, it it was played the same. Yeah, when I watched the cuz the DVD was the uncut version as well as the Blu-ray is as well. But it was the exact same as the uh as what we streamed on on Showtime. So, Okay. Okay. Yeah, I didn't see any difference. So I was like, maybe, you know, they have accepted this version. Yeah. So there were some there were some cuts made to the theatrical. Okay. Okay. Okay, makes sense. Probably some of the scenes were like the ice pick when the ice pick goes into the eye's head, or nose, or eye. No different from Braveheart. I haven't seen it. Um, blind spot. Yeah. That's that's still rated R quality. That kind of uh uh but it's like a like the graphic of it, you know, it just it's going in. Yeah. It's only for like a half a second, but it's enough to where it's like, whoa. Yeah, jolting. You're like, ooh, I had forgotten about that. Like I I knew I knew the guy got stabbed or whatever, but I I didn't remember a close-up where she's like, whoa. And that's probably the unrated version. He's like, I don't know. Okay. This guy's not having a good day. They like pause at all. At all. He was like, it's great. No. Holy crap. Oh, man. But yeah. Uh, yeah, so that's that's But we think about this director's sensibilities, right? I mean, he's not afraid to when it comes to violence, you know, what I'm saying, go to those extremes. We think about, I mean, right? We did Robocop last time. And uh, you know, when we think about Murphy, you know, that with the head that was made, you know, you know, getting, you know, brains blown out. So, you know, True. It's not uh it's kind of falls in line with that. I mean, he doesn't shy away from the violence and the consequence of violence. True, true, true. Yeah, so I mean, it took her uh a director like this to pull this off just because, I mean, being there in San Francisco and fighting, you know, just, Yeah, all that I didn't I didn't know about all that. Uh with the um um the glad organization and all that kind of stuff. But it's it's also sometimes hard contextually to to fully get the the climate of the time. Um, cuz you know, we're so much younger then, and even remembering how homosexuality was was viewed then, cuz in in essence, this would be kind of pretty groundbreaking. Um, as far as the relationships that it was showing, you know, again, her and her bisexual relationship like, I mean, I totally forgotten that aspect was even was even in it. Um, but again, you know, they the the homosexual community, the the organization Glad, they were like, they were mad because of the portrayals. Yeah. Which, you know, there's one I'm like, you know, in one part of me is like, I can't I can't mad at them for, you know, saying, no, we don't want to be represented, you know, that way. Okay, you know, this this this woman is killing, you know, men because she hates men or whatever, and then her partner who's, you know, all the way home is lesbian is is in the one that ends up, you know, ends up dying, and, you know, the bisexual one she ends up with ends up with the guy, so it's like, oh, it's fascinating. So, it makes makes you wonder about the truth. But then the director was like, have you watched my other movies? Yeah. You know, We don't have time. We don't have time for that. I'm like, oh, come on, now. Like, someone was one of the things where you got to, you know, be some give and take. But, I mean, they, man, they tried to disrupt the production big time. I was like, what? Wow. I had no idea it had gone through all those all those things. It's interesting how certain organizations may not have the same resources, but they'll ride, you know, the resources of another wave coming in to They said that point blank. They said this was the opportunity to make make a statement. And they and some feel that it was successful. So one one guy said, I don't think there would be like Will and Grace or whatever, you know, without this statement. But they tried to I mean, they tried to hit it and hit it in the the pockets, hit the money, hit the box office. And but they one thing I had to say. I'm like, man, come on, spoiling the spoiling the film like that, I'm like that's that's that's extra foul. Like, come on, man. Because that now you are, you know, boycott the film, you know, do your thing, but don't don't spoil it. Like, come on, now. That's you you you hurting like other other people. You people who may, you know, be advocates or whatever. That's yeah, come on, you ain't got to do it like that. And then some people are not in that world. And so they don't know the politics of, you know, of San Francisco, of being in that land. So they don't know the differ, you know, what's going on. Or that there's even stereotypes in that way. Right. Because again, for Verhoeven, Verhoeven, he was like, for me, this is just, you know, this is the fact that within this, uh world, there's there's basically, you know, straight, bisexual, and homosexual. And and that's it. People are just what what they are. It's accepted, and then within that, anybody could be, you know, good or or or bad or murderer or not a murderer. It's just what it is. And it's it's uh from the director's point, he's like, in my country, we don't have a problem with this. That's right. No, I think where I'm from, you know, I'm like, you know, yeah, okay. So, it's very fascinating. Like, you know, when, sometimes not having all the information, but versus, but versus again, people in certain groups that they've experienced so much of so much, you know, you get to a point where you're like things boil over. It's enough. Yeah. So it's like, yeah, at the time. And it's kind of true, though. At that time, like in the '90s, like if you see like a gay character, especially if it was like a black male, he's always like the old like over the top gay character. We're flying buoyant, super flamboyant. He's like over the top. Um, and you just kind of get used to seeing that character. And then but if you're relying on movies to kind of tell you what the world is, you think, yeah, you get you get that point of reference. Yeah, I always all gay guys are like this, and all straight ones are boys in the hood. Or, you know what I mean. So, Painted by cinema. Yeah, people It could be dangerous. Yeah, yeah. So it it was a very fascinating uh fact. Again, I got no issue any any group pushing saying, oh, we don't want to be portrayed this way. But don't don't spoil the movie for me. Don't spoil it. Right. Come on, now. You got you got a myriad of ways, but don't don't spoil the film for me. What do you think about the commentary?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Uh, commentary was was solid. There were a lot of uh interesting facts that they threw out. And they even talked about how certain things were were shot. You know, it's the obviously the director and along with his uh director of photography, uh Jean de Bont. Um and yeah, they talk about different kinds of setups uh and how certain things were lit and how they had to grab certain shots. So, yeah, I thought it was I thought it was solid. How about you?
Casey G. Smith: I think, um, I enjoyed like uh Paul's excitement. Um, the DP had good information just about lighting and things like that. But I wouldn't really recommend it for like just for a filmmaker to listen to it to kind of get a lot of information out of. Um, but I would suggest like a filmmaker getting the movie, especially, you know, if you can get a Blu-ray or something solid, and just kind of study the film from like a visual cinematic visual language, because there's a lot going on with the visual language of this film.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, okay. All right. I thought the commentary uh was touching on those different things from the different angles that they talked about and no, they did, they did. It was just like there was like a lot of blank spots and then two, um, uh um, it felt like the director was sometimes it would just tell you what's what you already know what's what's going on in the film. You know what I mean? It was like
Casey G. Smith: Oh, okay. I can see that for sure.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like, you already know the story. Why are you telling me the story?
Casey G. Smith: Sure, sure.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's that's the thing. If if they replaced that more with like more information and more filmmaking things, or even if it was just like trivia that happened like, hey, this is a, you know, different location, blah blah blah blah blah. Yeah, I guess I felt like he was he was like from a story standpoint, he was kind of breaking down like the see like here's like where these different seeds were were planted here there, but yeah, the at the end of the day, it is information that we ultimately come to know.
Casey G. Smith: Especially if you're paying attention to the film, you you you caught all that. Sure, sure. Yeah, yeah. That was the only thing. It was like cuz he was telling you what you've already seen. And then so that kind of like got in my nerves. Like, man, just take that out. You didn't need to tell us what we saw. I I enjoyed it though. cuz for me, I felt like he was like just kind of reiterating cuz even I was like, man, did she really do it? But, you know, but the ice pick there is like, no, there was an ice pick there. Under the bed. Yeah. That's that's ice pick is is there. But uh I don't know, I I I I enjoy uh I enjoy the commentary. And I um and because he's like a his excitement for it is kind of intoxicating. He's like, oh okay, he's happy, he loves talking about it. But I think the fact that they have like a classic film that I think they just enjoy watching it, you know what I mean? Like I think they just enjoy. I would be too if I had a classic film. Yeah, cuz this is like I think when they did this commentary, it probably would have been like early 2000s. Uh when they when they rocked this thing out. So to be able to come back and visit it and you're like, yeah, we did something. Yeah, we did a thing. Yes, we did. Um, what was I about to say? Um, okay, so like the director, this is like going like behind the scenes that that blonde poison feature, it was like 30 minutes. And he said that when he was trying to get actors to be involved, he was like, you have to do exactly everything I say, you know, this we need we're going to be shooting nude, this, so if you're not down with that, there's no negotiations or anything. You just got to do what I say. So that automatically eliminates a majority of your actors and actresses. Sure. Cuz who wants to do that? Nobody. These two were bold enough to do it, man. I like how my uh he said uh I like to see the other people eat crow because you know, not only did they do it, it was a successful film. And I mean it for some Oscars. So, um, yeah, they got the last laugh on that one. And again, as raw as the as raw as the the sex scenes are, they're they're equal they're impactful because they have a meaning to them, right? And there's there's a there's an extra level of tension. And even when they even leading up to when they do have it, there's such a build-up of tension, right? That's there. Where it's a it's a payoff, but also there's like this this there's this genuine concern and worry, right? Because She's doing She's doing all the things, you know, for us is not We're not as excited to watch it. You know, as a as a watch because we know that this lady has done this before. Exactly. There's a tension. We're like, no. We're not as excited. We know for sure. That she's the killer. Just yet, right? And but she's got the scarf, tying them up. Right, and books about it. You know, but you see when we see her reaching like she's reaching for something. Yeah, that's when it's like way, what? And then like, who does that? And then she's like, comes forward and they give you that moment, that beat. Yeah. It's like, I don't know. Okay. It's it's all good. And then, you know, unties them. You're like, huh? Okay. Yeah, they they man, they mess with these psychologically, but it's on this constant, you know, boom, this tension. So, yeah, they they make it work. Yeah. That's how you shoot a sex scene. There you go. Everybody. Uh, where were we? Trivia or We done with trivia. Filmmaker Tips. Um, I only had I had two, but we talked about the elevator. You talked about the elevator. Mhm. How when they it's an elevator shot, camera's already in the elevator, guys come in, the door closes. This is a studio this is a uh a studio scene, right? They did this on a lot. Um, when they close those doors, they change the background uh of that scene to make it seem like the elevator is moving. They shake the camera a little bit. Door opens back up, different scene, they get out, veer to the left. And that's how you can knock these things out. And they said it's more efficient when you do that. And you can save money when you do that. Yeah. Even at the ho the hotel scene where Gus is going, uh I mean toward the end. The same thing. Where he's going each each floor. Yeah. So effective. You're like, that can't, man, just you know, suspension of belief. Um. Yeah. You know, reshoot opening and intros if you need to. The opening scene where where uh Sharon Stone's character Catherine first shows up and she meets uh Nick and Gus. You know, that was shot early on. And she just wasn't quite fully in the character of Catherine just yet. And then after uh Verhoeven, Verhoeven, Verhoeven, After the director had a conversation with her like 12 hours later than something just changed. She was able to really embrace the character. So they went back later on and shot that that opening intro. Which is which is key. It's kind of like where you write a speech, right? You say, you write the body first, then you go back and write your intro and your conclusion. Use visual elements like arms being tied up. Um, when Okay, so how going to say this. So, use visual elements to kind of help tell your story. So when um Catherine is being interrogated, and she holds her hands behind her head, and she kind of like holds like almost like she's pulling her hair up, but she's not really pulling her hair up. She just has her hands behind her head. Um, it's a way to visually tie her to like the crime scene and things like that. So you can use visual elements to tie people to certain things. Mhm. That's good one. That's a good one. Uh, help actors understand how to play with the camera, like they play with the other actors. Especially if they're coming from stage performances. So, um, uh Janine Triplehorn, who played Dr. Garner, uh the the psychiatrist for for Nick. Uh she was, you know, just out of school, just out of Juliard, had done some stage play. She had done some nudity also, so she was okay with what was required for the film, but very quickly, she had to learn that, okay, she needed to to act smaller, to be more concise, to do more things with with gestures and facial expressions, because the camera picks up so much. And so she had to learn to play to the camera as to the other actors. Yeah. Yeah. I don't have any more tips. All right, real quick. We'll talk to elevators. Um, some actors can uh become characters which can take a while to shake. And so, um, this is another one of the reasons why Sharon Stone waited so long to do the sequel because once she embodied Catherine, uh it took her a while to to to shed her basically. Oh, Lord. Um, like the Joker is some. Yeah. I mean, once like you go there, and like and and this director, he likes to talk a lot about, you know, kind of spiritual aspects of things. He even refers to her character, maybe like as a devil, because she's able to be a mastermind because she's the devil. Yeah, man, it's the seduction and all that kind of stuff. But uh and even talks about Michael Douglas, like he has an element of like a darkness to him, even like maybe an evil about him. So like, wow, that's a hell of a thing to say. Uh, but yeah, so that that some actors can get caught up in things, you know, Michael B. Jordan when he played Killmonger, it took him a while to come out of that, uh going like that dark sometimes. So, yeah, with some actors, they can get lost in a role for a while, well beyond after after shooting. Uh and then uh lastly, you know, there are times to have close set for certain scenes when they shot the sex scene, that was it was a close set and everything was choreographed. So, I mean, you can have, I mean, again, that's it's one of the most, you know, sensual, powerful scenes, but for the actual actors, it's uh it's a mechanical, a very much so mechanical thing to pull it off on camera to make it look that, you know, amazing, that hot, whatever you want to call it. So, Yeah. You can like some of these other films and just just do it. Wow. There's some films I'm not going to mention them, uh but they are uh Hollywood productions, indie and well known, that the people just went on and just did it on screen. I've I've heard tales of such things. Yeah. Yeah. Some of them you can see. You can actually see it. I was like, oh, okay. They did it. Okay. Well, how about that? That's a way. That's a way. Reginald Titus Jr.: I was talking to Shanti today. I said, I talked to kids so much during the day, I said, I probably sound remedial to adults. I was like, laundromat. And then she started laughing. I was. So, every now and then my boy Jason will say, yeah, you know what I'm saying, I'm something, you know, potty, whatever, go to the potty. I've heard adults do that from time to time. I'm going to go to the potty. I mean, the bathroom. I'm going to go to the bathroom. I got it. The potty, he said potty, yes. I love it. He kind of just slid, he slipped out.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. I get it. You got to talk in the two worlds.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I understand.
Casey G. Smith: What was that one movie or a show where a lady was on a date with somebody and she was like a mom, and she like, when the food came out, she just reached over his plate and started cutting up his. And then she's like, oh my God, I'm so sorry. I'm just so used to it.

Casey G. Smith: Good to be back, sir.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And today we're talking about Basic Instinct, directed by Paul Verhoeven, and we have the music by Jerry Goldsmith with the original score. This was 1992. We have a budget of...
Casey G. Smith: 49 million dollars.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And how did it perform at the box office?
Casey G. Smith: Uh, opening weekend of 15 million, a US and Canadian gross or domestic gross of 117.7 million, but a uh a total worldwide gross of 352.9 million dollars.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wow. Wow.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, it was the highest grossing film of of that year.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Nice. It has a kind of like that European flavor to it, that artistic thing. And then, you know, being um uh directed that's not from America, you know, bringing that taste. That's uh interesting. And it yeah, we'll get into it, but it faced some uh some backlash.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. Good old Basic Instinct. Uh, but before we dive further into Basic Instinct, let's talk about News and Movies Watched.
Casey G. Smith: All right, so in the news, we have the the tragic sudden and unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman. Of course, he is best known for playing the role of of Black Panther. And so we here on Filmmaker Commentary, we just wanted to take a a a moment and and just recognize this uh wonderful uh young talent uh gone too soon at the age of only 43.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wow.
Casey G. Smith: So a little bit about uh about Chadwick and I'm I'm I'm taking uh some snippets off of biography.com in case you want to read his his full bio. But uh Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born in 1976 in South Carolina. He attended Howard University in Washington D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. Ha ha.
Casey G. Smith: Was it? I thought it was Howard.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, Howard University.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, it sounded like you said Harvard.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, I'm sorry. I yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Howard University in Washington D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing. Uh he then attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. He did a lot of stage play work and he actually uh worked as part of the Hip Hop Theater Festival and has written the plays, Hieroglyphic Graffiti, Deep Azure, and Rhyme Deferred. Additionally, he has directed a number of stage productions as well as the short film Blood Over a Broken Pond.
Casey G. Smith: He had some uh early starring roles on TV. Again, you can go back and read those. Um started a couple of films, had a couple of appearances on some some NBC shows, a couple of soap operas, but of course his breakout role, when we really began to recognize his name, obviously was playing Jackie Robinson in 42.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Mhm.
Casey G. Smith: Reginald, did you see 42?
Reginald Titus Jr.: I did not.
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Uh, yeah, worthwhile, worthwhile checking out. And when you just see like his his dedication to the the role in playing Jackie Robinson, you could you could see then that there was something there, something special uh about about this actor. Um, then of course next, you know, playing the role of The Godfather himself. Yeah. James Brown in Get On Up. And this this might be a maybe his most impressive role.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Really?
Casey G. Smith: Just the all around for, I mean, to play James Brown, uh who from a performance standpoint is one of the greatest performers of all time. To have to take on his moves and then you're you're also trying to sing, that is that is that's that, that's something else. And um, yeah, he went for it.
Casey G. Smith: Um, and of course, around that time, a little bit after that, then uh he was also also shot the film uh Thurgood.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's right. Yep. Thurgood. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: And so already, you know, tackling uh roles of iconic Americans, specifically African Americans, who were who were pioneers and groundbreaking in terms of what they did for their industries and even for the black community as a whole. These men, these own guards were heroes, not perfect, but they were heroes nonetheless. Yes. And then, of course, he got cast into the MCU in the role of T'Challa, the Black Panther, first appearing in Captain America Civil War, where he absolutely stole the show. It's true. Stole the show in that film. And then went on to star in Black Panther, the 2018 release that set the world on fire. That film was a movement.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It was. It was.
Casey G. Smith: You and I and and your son, we we went to the theater to see it and there was man, there was something in the air. There was an energy about that film. There was a a pride about that film and there were people of all backgrounds, nationalities, and colors, but to see a film with a black director, a predominantly black cast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And co-lead. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Uh, that went on to win multiple Academy Awards. Wow. And then Chadwick there at the center holding it down as as T'Challa was just it it was a cultural touchstone and it is the most successful single Marvel superhero film as far as a single character, I mean, a Marvel film that's not named Avengers basically.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Pretty much. Yeah. Which is a big deal because you had people that were I think a lot of Marvel people come back more than once, but just collectively people that never even watched the Marvel films coming out to watch the film more than once is interesting.
Casey G. Smith: Totally. My my mom went to the, my mom doesn't go to the theater. I said, Mom, you got to go see this movie. This is important for the culture.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like going out to vote basically.
Casey G. Smith: Vote for the culture. Exactly. Right. Exactly. I was like, we want more of this, we vote with our dollars. And she went out, took my, she went out, saw it, and she she enjoyed it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: I was like, all right. But 1.3 billion at the global box office. That's right. That's right. So also continuing to smash the misnomer of people in Hollywood saying for a while, oh, you know, black films, you know, don't don't carry, you know, well internationally.
Reginald Titus Jr.: They can no longer lie to us basically.
Casey G. Smith: Exactly. So, um, after of course, Black Panther, then he was then in Infinity War and then of course in Avengers End Game. And obviously we all were excited and looking forward to him returning as Black Panther. He also had the the film uh 21 Bridges that came out.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Um, and also he was in The Five Bloods, the Spike Lee film.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Most recently.
Casey G. Smith: Most recently, right. And of course, there was a a social media post that that had gone up with him and where he looked thin and and some fans showed concern. Uh when I I saw the post and I I thought it was just him preparing for the role after I'd seen the movie The Five Bloods. And uh unfortunately it was far more serious than we realized. And um August 28th of 2020, um his his family put up a a post and said it it is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Uh Chadwick was diagnosed diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it the last four years that it progressed to stage four. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all. Uh yeah, he brought films to Um, mhm mhm mhm. Is he in a new film that that's coming out? Um that's kind of talking about civil rights. Is there another film he's he's in that's about to hit theaters?
Casey G. Smith: Yes, so, um from The Five Bloods, uh August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more, uh all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. Lord. Uh it is with honor, excuse me, it was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home with his wife and family by his side.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Amen. That's the way to bounce, man. You know, with the family, it's my my cousin bounce, you know, just family around and it's time to let let the ghost go. But man, he left left behind a good legacy, man. That we can be proud of. You can got some some positive images, um that you can go and and feel empowered, you know, I I know, you know, when we released our film, like it was literally like two weeks after Black Panther came out and kind of just felt like we were kind of part of it. And it was it was you that suggested we not drop our film the same week as Black Panther.
Casey G. Smith: Absolutely, absolutely. I was like, no.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Good good call.
Casey G. Smith: No. We ride the wave. Yes. We ride the wave cuz people are going to be feeling it. And yeah. Um, thank y'all for for for listening. Cool.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: But here at Filmmaker Commentary, again, I I I echo Reginald's sentiments. Um, an amazing legacy from an actor who I believe, man, had had so much more uh I think, excuse me, an amazing talent and human being who I believe had so much more to give. I I have no doubt he would have gone on to direct uh some some amazing films in the future.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, for sure. For sure.
Casey G. Smith: Uh cuz he he was just he just came across as a consummate professional. Um, you know, he he carried himself with with an air of of of regalness, but at the same time, you know, like just down to Earth, just man, I I I'm not going to lie, man, like uh this this one was was a heartbreaker in in the midst of all that's taken place in 2020.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. 2020 has been a hell of a year.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, it has. Yes, it has.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like we just can't take blow after blow. It's just like, all right, mercy.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Goodness. Uh, but but Chadwick, uh our condolences to to your your family. Um and to to all the fans out there, you know, I mean, Black Panther brought us all together, regardless of where you were from. I think it it brought the world together. And and it's a testament to the progress that that we can make uh to the respect that we can give to all people, regardless of where they're from. So, you know, as we take the time to to remember uh Chadwick's memory and his his legacy and now that he now that he lies uh amongst the Pantheon uh Pantheon of of great heroes that he portrayed now as one of them. Um, may we all look to uh treat each other with a little more respect and dignity and and push push through and persevere like he did.
Reginald Titus Jr.: True. Um, just to kind of add to it, when he was at Howard, um going to the I think it was to the Oxford education, what I didn't know is Felicia Rashad was his teacher. And he couldn't afford to go to the out of uh the out of country uh university.
Casey G. Smith: Study abroad.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And so he, she found somebody to pay his way. Felicia Rashad, you know, was a teacher. Shout out. Turns out that it was Denzel Washington that paid his way to the thing.
Casey G. Smith: See, I thought it was just a general scholarship that he that he had put money into. I didn't know he had directly funded Chadwick.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. And but, you know, I don't know if that's direct, you know, from Felicia Rashad, kind of orchestrating that. You know what I mean? Cuz I I didn't I didn't even know, you know, she was teaching at Howard. So I'm just like, whoa.
Casey G. Smith: Right.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The one Howard is, you know, the spot. Uh almost went there for for law school. You know, there was yeah, there was a point in time where I was like trying to make that decision because it was like, so I was looking at schools that will be the least amount of money to pay, but push out people that make the most money. And it was Howard University, mainly because you're there, you're watching. You know, you that the connection and you're in DC.
Casey G. Smith: Connection and location. Yes, yes, sir. Location, location, location.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And so almost went there, but after talking to some, you know, a friend about it, I decided that path was not, the legal path was not for me.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The lifestyle, the lifestyle what it takes.
Casey G. Smith: Gotcha.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The lifestyle, it's hard on a lot of families.
Casey G. Smith: Gotcha.

Casey G. Smith: There's wisdom in counsel, right?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes, sir. But we just wanted to take a moment to Yeah, so just oh, uh I say that to say uh Denzel Washington, he was kind of talking about uh Chadwick Boseman. He's like, man, these guys, you know, cuz Chadwick Boseman, it was a speech where he was just talking about, you know, if it wasn't for these guys, we wouldn't be where we're at. And then Denzel Washington, you know, I just did a little, you know, a little just a little bit, you know, to kind of everything else is all him, you know, I just did a little bit. But um, when I he said, when I look at Black Panther, it's like, oh he said, oh, these guys are they're leading the way. This is the new wave, you know, so to get that that mutual respect, but at the same time, you know, seeing Denzel Washington watch Chadwick Boseman saying this like, you got tears in his eyes like, whoa. And, you know, Denzel usually, you know, don't cry and something, but it's when you've been through a certain experience, you know, when you're a certain age and you get that respect, but at the same time, you see how far the medium has gone.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Exactly.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You know.
Casey G. Smith: He cried, and I know uh uh uh Dick Gregory, he said, um uh uh what movie was that, Django, you know, meant something for him because it was a, you know, they didn't let black men get on horses or, you know, that that was
Reginald Titus Jr.: That imagery.
Casey G. Smith: Wasn't available. So it was like, they kind of understand it. Anyhow, yes, he left behind a good legacy.

Movies Watched - "Don't F**k with Cats" & "New Mutants"
Casey G. Smith: How about movies watched?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes.
Casey G. Smith: So let's jump into Don't F**k with the Cats.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Okay. How about that? You made that recommendation.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, yes, yes. Uh, I I I literally just finished watching the third episode before uh we jumped in. And so if you haven't seen Don't Watch the Cats, it's a a mini docu-series on Netflix. And uh we're going to talk about it, so there may be spoilers.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, yeah. There will be spoilers for sure.
Casey G. Smith: So, you might want to jump ahead maybe about like six, seven minutes or so, but we jumping in.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. So what do you think?
Casey G. Smith: What the hell? I'm going.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I I had no idea this thing was out there. I knew nothing about any of this. This is my first time hearing, seeing any of it. But um, really well done, really effective, and at the last 10 minutes have this impressive cinematic quality to it. The way they they the way they hearken back like a almost like a um uh what I'm thinking of uh uh M. Night Shyamalan, almost like the end of Unbreakable. Oh, like the reveal, yeah. Yeah, bam, bam, and cut, you know, to the things that they build up and like oh oh oh. Oh. Yes. Yeah, man. And then all the Basic Instinct time like, what in the world? So Don't F with the Cats is about um some crazy kid that's on the internet creating these horrific videos of murdering cats. It starts It starts off.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's how it starts off.
Casey G. Smith: Right. A uh yeah, a group of people, well, people on Facebook see yeah, a two cats get killed by being like vacuum suction into a a bag and suffocated basically. And it starts this group to form that initially has thousands of people and they're trying to find this guy and they're trying to find hints and clues and then eventually another video pops up of a cat being killed fed to a python. Yep. And a a core group of them just they they literally start just breaking down and examining every aspect of this video, just trying to find clues. The the the wall sockets, the posters, the this, the that to track down the location of where this person is and any identity. And they eventually do, which is pretty impressive, actually. Um, but at the same time, this person also realizes he's being watched and ultimately that's what that's what he wants. Um, and but it's showing the tendencies of a psychopath. Um, and typically, they say a lot of times with psychopaths it starts with animals and eventually graduates to people. And that's what happens. And just seeing this unfold and that these videos have been yeah, are being put up there and sent and people are watching it. And you find out this guy who's like a model. Yep. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wants to be like some social influencer, slash model, reality, I don't know.
Casey G. Smith: Slash actor, psycho. But he wants all the smoke. He wants all the fame and and eventually he graduates to get to murdering an actual human being, like butchering someone. And they figure out um that he's in based on upon an image that's taken, they figure out the street and because of a gas station and they figure out that he's in Toronto. And oh man, it's just just it's just insane what ensues from there. They try to contact the police, the police are non-responsive to them, but they eventually do discover the a guy discovers the body in a suitcase that's locked and then the police finally get involved and they see what's happening and they see the video and uh that begins the manhunt basically. Lord. And they eventually track him down as he gets to Florida cuz he he wants the he's a big fan of Catch Me If You Can, the Leonardo DiCaprio film. And loves to leave breadcrumbs, wants to be tracked, but damn is he smart, man. The way he sets this up. Wow. And then the way this documentary runs, like it gets you doubting for like, oh wait a minute, maybe he maybe Manny Lopez is the one that's Cuz even he makes claims that someone named Manny Lopez has been abusing him and and leading him on, and they even go to his mom, you know, they interview his mom and she's like, those those animal those animal lover people, they're just terrible, you know. She's she's just got the blinders of a mother on, you know, and wants to believe the best of her of her son. Um, but man, when like when you when you get to the end of this thing. Yes. Um, and this this is going to lead into our talking about Basic Instinct. When you get to the end and you see that this guy is is doing things beat for beat. He has multiple aliases. Yep. Uh, one being uh C. Trenell. Oh wait, Trammel. C.
Reginald Titus Jr.: This has been a while since I've seen it so I don't have some of the details aren't in my brain anymore.
Casey G. Smith: One of his aliases is an alias by the name of uh yeah, C. Trammel. Um, which, you know, one of his favorite movies. He literally, like his mom keeps a keychain, like a that he that he used to have, of from Basic Instinct. Sharon Stone's character in that film is called Catherine Trammel. So, C. Trammel. Um, wow. And then when he when he's when he's in the like when they they they've caught him, he's in the interrogation room and he asked he he he's like being real shy and coy and people are like, can this be the guy? Can this be the killer? And he's he's like, oh can I'm cold. Can I have a a a a blanket or something to put on? And they give him that and then he asked for a cigarette. You know, and he crosses his legs, whatever. And you don't really think anything like, okay, wow, this guy's just acting like a real, you know, wimp or whatever. Like, okay, maybe there's something true about this Manny guy, but then all of a sudden like, you know, they begin to draw the clues together, okay, the alias of C. Trammel and then they keep he keeps saying that it's a guy named Manny, Manny Vasquez, the one that did this thing to him. Again, in the movie Basic Instinct, spoiler alert. In the movie Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone's, you know, person that she's engaged to, was engaged to, as Catherine Trammel, was a boxer by the name of Manny Vasquez. And then you find out this is just a a cover-up that he had created. He had been going to lawyers and filing reports about this guy abusing him and and making pictures. I mean, just elaborate scheme. Yeah, I come back to the quote that I'll I'll use later on. He's dangerous or evil, but brilliant.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, so amazing recommendation, I must say. I was like,
Reginald Titus Jr.: I've redeemed myself from Money Heist.
Casey G. Smith: I was like, wow. I I I'm not knocking Money Heist, I'm just saying it's not my cup of tea. But the world the world says otherwise, so kudos to the world, I'm just, it's not you, it's me. Blah blah blah blah blah. But this, this was this was impressive. Oh, yes, it is crazy. Yeah. I'm going to I'm going to recommend it to some people for sure, man.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's crazy.
Casey G. Smith: When they did the montage and they cut it against Basic Instinct and showing him doing that, I was like, my man, that had at the time I had I'm familiar with certain scenes in Basic Instinct, haven't seen the whole thing so at the time. And so like now that I've seen it, I was like, oh. Bro.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Haunting.
Casey G. Smith: Haunting, man. Cuz again, I finished Basic Instinct and the commentary, and then I watched this last. I had I had I had I had a half.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Like dessert. Yeah. Something like that. Something like that. I was like, what? Man, it's kind of terrifying, man, honestly. Yes, yes. For me, what have I watched? Recently, I never really had like an animation TV show that I just consistently watch or anything like that. This shows that I check every now and then like Family Guy or every now and then Simpsons or something like that, but nothing where I'm just really, really into these days. Um, a lot of people have been talking about Rick and Morty forever, for years. You know, podcasts is randomly out here, periodically. And had nothing to do. I think this was Saturday or Friday. I can't remember what day it was. But I was just like, you know what? It it was Saturday morning. Uh cuz Shanti was dropping the kids off. So I was like, no one's here. Let's push play on Rick and Morty. Blown away. Pilot. I I was just sucked in. I so much so that I even brought my wife. I said, you got to check this out. And it's smart. She enjoys it. It gives us stuff to talk about. There's pop culture. There's a little bit of everything. So, uh Rick and Morty, man. I'm on the second season right now.
Casey G. Smith: I've been you a time or two on this podcast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You probably did. Just throwing that out there.
Casey G. Smith: And the reason why I got into it a couple years back was because again, at my job, I'm speaking to high school students and they constantly were wearing T-shirts and I'd ask, what's your favorite animated, you know, show? And they would often say, I I hear Rick and Morty. Like, every other, I'm like, huh, okay. And so finally I I decided to check it out myself and I was like, dude, this is It's so gross, but this is so awesome. You're right. It is smart and oh man. Yeah. I'm I'm so glad you had a chance to to jump into it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I'm in the world now. Hey, Rick and Morty. Yeah, it is quite good. I don't know, Rick. So,
Casey G. Smith: Come on, Morty. Get get what what are you doing? Come on, let's go. Oh boy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, oh man, that's gross. Yeah, Morty is like the most nervous, like teenager ever. So yeah, so that's that's Get it from his dad, though. Yeah. I don't know. What what I can't even do with it. Like, wait a minute, Rick. He's just just walk all over that guy. So, yeah, Rick and Morty, man, that's um that's where we're at, season, yeah, season two, episode two, that's where we're at right now. Um, one more thing I'll mention. I saw kinda saw The New Mutants, the uh previous Fox film, now it's under the the label of uh 20 21st Century Films. The rebranding. 21st Century Films. They just erased him. Pretty much. Never happened. 21st Century Films. And I saw it I saw it a drive-in. It's my first time at a drive-in. And unfortunately, uh it wasn't dark enough, cuz the film is very dark. It wasn't dark enough outside, too much light pollution, and there was a concert thing happening on another screen adjacent to ours. That could be a problem. Total problem. I could I mean, literally, could barely make out the film. Um, not a good experience. And while watching is when I found out about the passing of Chadwick. So it just kind of marred It's been a rough weekend. Yeah, it's bad. That was a that was a not a good Friday. So I I want to watch it again. I'll I'll wait till it comes out on, you know, I think it's going to I think because of streaming rights, and this is why Disney made sure they release in the theaters, because it's going to it's going to go to HBO Max first. That's why they didn't just release it streaming wise because it wouldn't go to Disney Plus. It's going to go to HBO Max first. So, I'll have to uh I'll check it out there. But um, but no, I from what I saw, I I I I enjoyed it. I'm I'm I'm familiar with The New Mutants and uh you know, they made they definitely made some big changes. I know the creator, one of the creators of the uh of that team, man, was really not happy with it. They even spelled his name wrong in the in the in the credits. Oh, man. Was that on purpose or? No. So it's somebody else's oversight, but he yeah, he went he he went in on them. So, but yeah, the Mutants. Unbelievable. Um, I don't think I've seen anything else. I know I've recently seen an interview on YouTube from a wrestler called New Jack. It's on Vlad TV. Just a random interview. I don't know how I got on my timeline. But I looked at his face, his guy's forehead looks mangled. It looks like someone pulled a chunk of forehead off and then threw it back on backwards. Like, that's what his forehead looks like right now. And I'm just like, man, this is an interesting looking character cuz he's in a suit. He's got like these staples or something over his eyebrows. I like this guy, um, but he's talking about how, what's the line that I I sent to you? Um, he he was talking about Vince McMahon and if somebody else dies in the ring or something, you know, it's their fault. Something something about somebody people dying in the ring. So I was like, you know what, I remember you talking about people dying in the ring, wrestling, and so I just kind of want to talk about it. But anyhow, watched this interview and I had no idea how horrific the wrestling industry is. You know, I'm saw some things, you know, heard some things from more like kind of like spiritual stuff and all that. Uh, but had no idea. And um, yeah, but anyhow, this interview is very entertaining. This guy is candid like nobody else. He is a great interview. And he from what I read in the comments, he's kind of toned down compared to how his character is.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. New Jack is uh an independent wrestler who at one time actually was a bounty hunter, if I'm not mistaken.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, for 10 years.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, and is yeah, 100% certifiable. He's crazy. And I've I've I've known about him since the late '90s in in the uh Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion. He was a guy you would bring out on pay-per-views, and if you were in the audience, you probably stood back 10 feet because this guy was diving off balconies. I mean, you could just you could just put in a highlight reel of New Jack and you will see some of the craziest stuff. I mean, the bumps, bumps is basically when you you you hit the you hit the mat or the floor, uh that's called a bump. And there's all kinds of ways to do that. I mean, this guy, I mean, literally, in in civic centers, like jumping off the the balcony onto somebody through a table, cuz his finisher was only a diving headbutt. He would do it from almost
Reginald Titus Jr.: A diving headbutt. That makes sense why his forehead is tore up.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, yeah, he's yeah, something else. But yeah, if you get a chance to, I mentioned this to you, the the Dark Side of Wrestling, the uh Chris Jericho produced series, they go in, they've a whole episode on New Jack, about 45 minutes. Yeah. And it'll show you all the footage and yeah, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, I've seen a couple just a couple of minutes. I'm just like, this is disgusting. I'm going to have to come back later. I'm eating lunch.
Casey G. Smith: That's his that's his style. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Especially when it's like, you know, he has a reputation for hurting people on purpose and, you know, trying to murder people in the ring. Uh when you see this on footage this happening on footage, you kind of like, uh, it's kind of It's cringe-worthy. Yeah. And again, he he is the exception. Like New Jack is the exception. All the other wrestlers that I've seen, like, you know, it's, you know, it's uh, they're above board. Exactly. You know, it's entertainment. But yeah, New Jack uh he crosses he has crossed the line uh more than one occasion. That's why he's not in a he'll not in a WWE or something like that. Like he's the indie circuit and that's that's where you should be. So,
Reginald Titus Jr.: You know where you belong.
Casey G. Smith: Mhm.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Unbelievable. But yeah, that was all for me for like TVs and movies.
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Yeah, I've I've been doing a lot of uh again just read different things. Again, I've been, you know, on some comic books and just uh, you know, I'm been getting set for this uh new Avengers game, uh Marvel's Avengers. This thing's about to drop, literally as the recording of this show. Uh it's actually dropped in some parts of the world. Uh to give you an idea. this thing this game's going to be pretty big. Uh when they did the beta over the past three weekends, they had about 6 million people play the beta. So, uh yeah, they're going to they're probably going to move some units on this thing.

Original score by Jerry Goldsmith. And if I'm not mistaken, this one actually, they uh they were nominated for an Oscar for Best Film Editing, and they're nominated for Best Music Original Score. Both nominations.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, they were. That is correct.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Let's jump into the synopsis.
Reginald Titus Jr.: A violent police detective investigates a brutal murder that might involve a manipulative and seductive novelist. Basic Instinct. And if this is your first time listening to Filmmaker Commentary, please know that there will be spoilers. You've been forewarned.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, how did you watch this film back in the day and currently? Cuz this came out in 1992. This is a little dated.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, so I first watched this, I may have, see if it's 92, I was 12. Uh I watched this at home. Um it was on video and VHS. And it was probably during the summer, and just found it and and watched it. I saw it. So I I may have been I was probably in junior high. Uh and watched it. And even then, you know, of course, you know, the the sex and all that, you're like, whoa, wow. But I remember watching it and remembering the story. I was like, whoa. It was like, I I was I was into stuff that, you know, that would make you think. I I could appreciate that. And uh I was, I mean, I was impressed. I was impressed with the film, even even then. Um, but I hadn't watched it since then, honestly. I hadn't gone back and watched it since then. So it was cool to come back to it now and just again, still being able to appreciate it all the more. I'm I like Neo Noir uh films. Uh you know, L.A. Confidential and you know, there's there's others that kind of take that that route. But uh but yeah, I appreciate the Neo Noir genre, so, yeah. How about you?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Um, I'm familiar with the iconic scene of the, you know, smoking the cigarette, being interrogated. That was all in pop culture in the '90s. Um, and then, yeah, that one, and then the intro scene, you know, got the ice pick killing the guy. He's like, whoa, okay. Uh but I've never seen the movie all the way through, you know, cuz we already know this girl is a killer, you know, it's already been given away. Everybody kind of knows what it is. So, outside of that, never really had interest to watch it, you know. I was a younger kid, but um, going back, looking at it now, this is my first time watching it all the way through. Watched it with the wife, and uh I said, this is your kind of film, and I I played it, and then like that first scene, because the first scene is just, it's the title sequence and it's like fuzzy, then it starts getting into focus, and we see, oh, there's somebody they're having sex. And it's very explicit. And then out of nowhere, I know this was coming, but my wife doesn't know that scene is coming. And so, while while our main character's riding her her partner, she reaches for that ice pick out of nowhere, and it's like a post, she like poses for a second like, like a quarterback, like going back and then, and then I I was like, uh why did she do that? Uh it was great seeing somebody see that for the first time. I was like, got your attention. So she scoots up to watch it even more.
Casey G. Smith: Why why why is the murder?
Reginald Titus Jr.: She was not expecting that. She was
Casey G. Smith: Oh, that's awesome. That's that's that's awesome. So she didn't know anything about, oh, that's great. That is great. Oh, man. I'm so great that man, that she gets his first time experiences. Man, that's that's awesome. Yes. That is awesome. So that was hilarious. So I watched that, you know, that was just the other day, so it's a long film. So,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Kind of.
Casey G. Smith: Two hours, right, at the two-hour mark.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, it was like right there, right.
Casey G. Smith: Hour one hour, 27 minutes. So, yeah, yeah, two hours and seven minutes.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Cuz they're just talking, you know, we'll talk about it a little bit later, but uh there yeah, there's talk. So that's how I watched the film this time. Uh what did you like uh what did you like or not like about the film?
Casey G. Smith: Um, I mean to me it it moves it moves quickly. cuz there's all you know, you're going from one one thing to the next. It's like continual. I love I love I love Sharon Stone's performance and Michael Douglas. Man, they are they are on their game. Yeah, they are committed. They are on their game. They are fearless in this film. But Sharon Stone is on, she's on another level. I mean, but it takes it takes somebody to be able to play play off of. Michael Douglas always has this kind of dangerous aspect to him. And I've and I'd grown up watching him in in movies like The Romance of the Stone.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Commited. Even Fatal Attraction.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, yeah. You know, but I I I've still never seen Fatal Attraction, you know. But I remember Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, like him and um Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner, like those were some of my favorite films going up as a kid, and then seeing him, you know, in this, like he's just such an edge that's there. And then Sharon Stone, man, she is just on fire.
Reginald Titus Jr.: She's on fire. Oh my God.
Casey G. Smith: Oh my God, she's on fire. I mean, she's I mean, she's she's got she's got everything, right? She's got the brain, she's got the looks, but she is absolutely maniacal. And to watch her slowly take over. Um, and to watch her control every situation she walks into, and just, I mean, the absolute mastermind. It's I I think I I I don't I'd have to look back to see what else came out in 92, but I'm like, why wasn't she nominated? Like, how could she not be nominated for this performance? Cuz she is a boss. She is an absolute boss. And and here's one thing I don't know if you caught in on the uh DVD, when you go through the special menus, if you um hit to the right on the ice pick on the on the first uh on the main menu, it will it will show you her audition tape. It give you like five minutes of audition tape. And then it'll show if you go when you on the next special menu, it'll give you the other uh young lady's uh the other uh co-actress, uh Janine Triplehorn, uh it'll give you her audition that uh that she did. It um, oh, by the way, um, I was going to buy the film, drove to Movie Trading Company in in Irving, Texas, they had the DVD, but I was looking for the Blu-ray. They said, our other location have it. So I drove to Arlington, went to that location. They didn't have the Blu-ray. They had the DVD. And then I was like, you know what, okay, I'm going to drive to Kimwell. So I'm driving to the Kimwell location. Found, they they said they had it in stock. I didn't see it. Got the uh DVD and it has a little ice pick in the actual case. And I was like, I want to I was like a little like a I'm a kid. I'm just like, look at I was like, I kind of wanted this this is pretty dope, you know, just to just to display and everything. But I said, let me double check to see if they got the Blu-ray. So I asked the guy, he went and looked and it was hiding. The Blu-ray was hiding in between another one. So I was like, ice pick, HD, Blu-ray, ice pick, no, I went with the Blu-ray. So, of course.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Filmaker. Yeah. I'm a filmmaker.
Casey G. Smith: But it was a good little selling point. Yeah. He just hit me with your propaganda. It almost worked. I was like, cuz I just like the way it looked. I was like, wow, this is cool. So I I had gotten the Blu-ray, for whatever reason, it wouldn't play for me. I just I went back and had to get the DVD. Um, and it was the it was the one that came in the case that was supposed to have the ice pick, but whoever had it before, cuz you know, it's used, they clearly had taken the ice pick. Um, so it's just a DVD. Just a DVD. Not even the fringes. No high definition. No, you know, no memorabilia, just just a DVD. Just the facts, ma'am, just the facts. Right. So, yeah, um, yeah, yeah, I had to throw that in there. Um, what did I like? Um, I enjoyed like uh Paul's excitement. Um, the DP had good information just about lighting and things like that. But I wouldn't really recommend it for like just for a filmmaker to listen to it to kind of get a lot of information out of. Um, but I would suggest like a filmmaker getting the movie, especially, you know, if you can get a Blu-ray or something solid, and just kind of study the film from like a visual cinematic visual language, because there's a lot going on with the visual language of this film.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, okay. All right. I thought the commentary uh was touching on those different things from the different angles that they talked about and no, they did, they did. It was just like there was like a lot of blank spots and then two, um, uh um, it felt like the director was sometimes it would just tell you what's what you already know what's what's going on in the film. You know what I mean? It was like
Casey G. Smith: Oh, okay. I can see that for sure.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like, you already know the story. Why are you telling me the story?
Casey G. Smith: Sure, sure.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's that's the thing. If if they replaced that more with like more information and more filmmaking things, or even if it was just like trivia that happened like, hey, this is a, you know, different location, blah blah blah blah blah. Yeah, I guess I felt like he was he was like from a story standpoint, he was kind of breaking down like the see like here's like where these different seeds were were planted here there, but yeah, the at the end of the day, it is information that we ultimately come to know.
Casey G. Smith: Especially if you're paying attention to the film, you you you caught all that. Sure, sure. Yeah, yeah. That was the only thing. It was like cuz he was telling you what you've already seen. And then so that kind of like got in my nerves. Like, man, just take that out. You didn't need to tell us what we saw. I I enjoyed it though. cuz for me, I felt like he was like just kind of reiterating cuz even I was like, man, did she really do it? But, you know, but the ice pick there is like, no, there was an ice pick there. Under the bed. Yeah. That's that's ice pick is is there. But uh I don't know, I I I I enjoy uh I enjoy the commentary. And I um and because he's like a his excitement for it is kind of intoxicating. He's like, oh okay, he's happy, he loves talking about it. But I think the fact that they have like a classic film that I think they just enjoy watching it, you know what I mean? Like I think they just enjoy. I would be too if I had a classic film. Yeah, cuz this is like I think when they did this commentary, it probably would have been like early 2000s. Uh when they when they rocked this thing out. So to be able to come back and visit it and you're like, yeah, we did something. Yeah, we did a thing. Yes, we did. Um, what was I about to say? Um, okay, so like the director, this is like going like behind the scenes that that blonde poison feature, it was like 30 minutes. And he said that when he was trying to get actors to be involved, he was like, you have to do exactly everything I say, you know, this we need we're going to be shooting nude, this, so if you're not down with that, there's no negotiations or anything. You just got to do what I say. So that automatically eliminates a majority of your actors and actresses. Sure. Cuz who wants to do that? Nobody. These two were bold enough to do it, man. I like how my uh he said uh I like to see the other people eat crow because you know, not only did they do it, it was a successful film. And I mean it for some Oscars. So, um, yeah, they got the last laugh on that one. And again, as raw as the as raw as the the sex scenes are, they're they're equal they're impactful because they have a meaning to them, right? And there's there's a there's an extra level of tension. And even when they even leading up to when they do have it, there's such a build-up of tension, right? That's there. Where it's a it's a payoff, but also there's like this this there's this genuine concern and worry, right? Because She's doing She's doing all the things, you know, for us is not We're not as excited to watch it. You know, as a as a watch because we know that this lady has done this before. Exactly. There's a tension. We're like, no. We're not as excited. We know for sure. That she's the killer. Just yet, right? And but she's got the scarf, tying them up. Right, and books about it. You know, but you see when we see her reaching like she's reaching for something. Yeah, that's when it's like way, what? And then like, who does that? And then she's like, comes forward and they give you that moment, that beat. Yeah. It's like, I don't know. Okay. It's it's all good. And then, you know, unties them. You're like, huh? Okay. Yeah, they they man, they mess with these psychologically, but it's on this constant, you know, boom, this tension. So, yeah, they they make it work. Yeah. That's how you shoot a sex scene. There you go. Everybody. Uh, where were we? Trivia or We done with trivia. Filmmaker Tips. Um, I only had I had two, but we talked about the elevator. You talked about the elevator. Mhm. How when they it's an elevator shot, camera's already in the elevator, guys come in, the door closes. This is a studio this is a uh a studio scene, right? They did this on a lot. Um, when they close those doors, they change the background uh of that scene to make it seem like the elevator is moving. They shake the camera a little bit. Door opens back up, different scene, they get out, veer to the left. And that's how you can knock these things out. And they said it's more efficient when you do that. And you can save money when you do that. Yeah. Even at the ho the hotel scene where Gus is going, uh I mean toward the end. The same thing. Where he's going each each floor. Yeah. So effective. You're like, that can't, man, just you know, suspension of belief. Um. Yeah. You know, reshoot opening and intros if you need to. The opening scene where where uh Sharon Stone's character Catherine first shows up and she meets uh Nick and Gus. You know, that was shot early on. And she just wasn't quite fully in the character of Catherine just yet. And then after uh Verhoeven, Verhoeven, Verhoeven, After the director had a conversation with her like 12 hours later then something just changed. She was able to really embrace the character. So they went back later on and shot that that opening intro. Which is which is key. It's kind of like where you write a speech, right? You say, you write the body first, then you go back and write your intro and your conclusion. Use visual elements like arms being tied up. Um, when Okay, so how going to say this. So, use visual elements to kind of help tell your story. So when um Catherine is being interrogated, and she holds her hands behind her head, and she kind of like holds like almost like she's pulling her hair up, but she's not really pulling her hair up. She just has her hands behind her head. Um, it's a way to visually tie her to like the crime scene and things like that. So you can use visual elements to tie people to certain things. Mhm. That's good one. That's a good one. Uh, help actors understand how to play with the camera, like they play with the other actors. Especially if they're coming from stage performances. So, um, uh Janine Triplehorn, who played Dr. Garner, uh the the psychiatrist for for Nick. Uh she was, you know, just out of school, just out of Juliard, had done some stage play. She had done some nudity also, so she was okay with what was required for the film, but very quickly, she had to learn that, okay, she needed to to act smaller, to be more concise, to do more things with with gestures and facial expressions, because the camera picks up so much. And so she had to learn to play to the camera as to the other actors. Yeah. Yeah. I don't have any more tips. All right, real quick. We'll talk to elevators. Um, some actors can uh become characters which can take a while to shake. And so, um, this is another one of the reasons why Sharon Stone waited so long to do the sequel because once she embodied Catherine, uh it took her a while to to to shed her basically. Oh, Lord. Um, like the Joker is some. Yeah. I mean, once like you go there, and like and and this director, he likes to talk a lot about, you know, kind of spiritual aspects of things. He even refers to her character, maybe like as a devil, because she's able to be a mastermind because she's the devil. Yeah, man, it's the seduction and all that kind of stuff. But uh and even talks about Michael Douglas, like he has an element of like a darkness to him, even like maybe an evil about him. So like, wow, that's a hell of a thing to say. Uh, but yeah, so that that some actors can get caught up in things, you know, Michael B. Jordan when he played Killmonger, it took him a while to come out of that, uh going like that dark sometimes. So, yeah, with some actors, they can get lost in a role for a while, well beyond after after shooting. Uh and then uh lastly, you know, there are times to have close set for certain scenes when they shot the sex scene, that was it was a close set and everything was choreographed. So, I mean, you can have, I mean, again, that's it's one of the most, you know, sensual, powerful scenes, but for the actual actors, it's uh it's a mechanical, a very much so mechanical thing to pull it off on camera to make it look that, you know, amazing, that hot, whatever you want to call it. So, Yeah. You can like some of these other films and just just do it. Wow. There's some films I'm not going to mention them, uh but they are uh Hollywood productions, indie and well known, that the people just went on and just did it on screen. I've I've heard tales of such things. Yeah. Yeah. Some of them you can see. You can actually see it. I was like, oh, okay. They did it. Okay. Well, how about that? That's a way. That's a way. Reginald Titus Jr.: I was talking to Shanti today. I said, I talked to kids so much during the day, I said, I probably sound remedial to adults. I was like, laundromat. And then she started laughing. I was. So, every now and then my boy Jason will say, yeah, you know what I'm saying, I'm something, you know, potty, whatever, go to the potty. I've heard adults do that from time to time. I'm going to go to the potty. I mean, the bathroom. I'm going to go to the bathroom. I got it. The potty, he said potty, yes. I love it. He kind of just slid, he slipped out.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. I get it. You got to talk in the two worlds.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I understand.
Casey G. Smith: What was that one movie or a show where a lady was on a date with somebody and she was like a mom, and she like, when the food came out, she just reached over his plate and started cutting up his. And then she's like, oh my God, I'm so sorry. I'm just so used to it.

Reginald Titus Jr.: Welcome to Filmmaker Commentary. I'm Reginald Titus Jr. I'm joined with Casey G. Smith. Welcome back, sir.
Casey G. Smith: Good to be back, sir.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And today we're talking about Basic Instinct, directed by Paul Verhoeven, and we have the music by Jerry Goldsmith with the original score. This was 1992. We have a budget of...
Casey G. Smith: 49 million dollars.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And how did it perform at the box office?
Casey G. Smith: Uh, opening weekend of 15 million, a US and Canadian gross or domestic gross of 117.7 million, but a uh a total worldwide gross of 352.9 million dollars.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wow. Wow.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, it was the highest grossing film of of that year.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Nice. It has a kind of like that European flavor to it, that artistic thing. And then, you know, being um uh directed that's not from America, you know, bringing that taste. That's uh interesting. And it yeah, we'll get into it, but it faced some uh some backlash.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. Good old Basic Instinct. Uh, but before we dive further into Basic Instinct, let's talk about News and Movies Watched.

Chadwick Boseman Tribute
Casey G. Smith: All right, so in the news, we have the the tragic sudden and unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman. Of course, he is best known for playing the role of of Black Panther. And so we here on Filmmaker Commentary, we just wanted to take a a a moment and and just recognize this uh wonderful uh young talent uh gone too soon at the age of only 43.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wow.
Casey G. Smith: So a little bit about uh about Chadwick and I'm I'm I'm taking uh some snippets off of biography.com in case you want to read his his full bio. But uh Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born in 1976 in South Carolina. He attended Howard University in Washington D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. Ha ha.
Casey G. Smith: Was it? I thought it was Howard.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, Howard University.
Casey G. Smith: Oh, it sounded like you said Harvard.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, I'm sorry. I yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Howard University in Washington D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing. Uh he then attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. He did a lot of stage play work and he actually uh worked as part of the Hip Hop Theater Festival and has written the plays, Hieroglyphic Graffiti, Deep Azure, and Rhyme Deferred. Additionally, he has directed a number of stage productions as well as the short film Blood Over a Broken Pond.
Casey G. Smith: He had some uh early starring roles on TV. Again, you can go back and read those. Um started a couple of films, had a couple of appearances on some some NBC shows, a couple of soap operas, but of course his breakout role, when we really began to recognize his name, obviously was playing Jackie Robinson in 42.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Mhm.
Casey G. Smith: Reginald, did you see 42?
Reginald Titus Jr.: I did not.
Casey G. Smith: Okay. Uh, yeah, worthwhile, worthwhile checking out. And when you just see like his his dedication to the the role in playing Jackie Robinson, you could you could see then that there was something there, something special uh about about this actor. Um, then of course next, you know, playing the role of The Godfather himself. Yeah. James Brown in Get On Up. And this this might be a maybe his most impressive role.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Really?
Casey G. Smith: Just the all around for, I mean, to play James Brown, uh who from a performance standpoint is one of the greatest performers of all time. To have to take on his moves and then you're you're also trying to sing, that is that is that's that, that's something else. And um, yeah, he went for it.
Casey G. Smith: Um, and of course, around that time, a little bit after that, then uh he was also also shot the film uh Thurgood.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's right. Yep. Thurgood. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: And so already, you know, tackling uh roles of iconic Americans, specifically African Americans, who were who were pioneers and groundbreaking in terms of what they did for their industries and even for the black community as a whole. These men, these own guards were heroes, not perfect, but they were heroes nonetheless. Yes. And then, of course, he got cast into the MCU in the role of T'Challa, the Black Panther, first appearing in Captain America Civil War, where he absolutely stole the show. It's true. Stole the show in that film. And then went on to star in Black Panther, the 2018 release that set the world on fire. That film was a movement.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It was. It was.
Casey G. Smith: You and I and and your son, we we went to the theater to see it and there was man, there was something in the air. There was an energy about that film. There was a a pride about that film and there were people of all backgrounds, nationalities, and colors, but to see a film with a black director, a predominantly black cast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And co-lead. Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Uh, that went on to win multiple Academy Awards. Wow. And then Chadwick there at the center holding it down as as T'Challa was just it it was a cultural touchstone and it is the most successful single Marvel superhero film as far as a single character, I mean, a Marvel film that's not named Avengers basically.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Pretty much. Yeah. Which is a big deal because you had people that were I think a lot of Marvel people come back more than once, but just collectively people that never even watched the Marvel films coming out to watch the film more than once is interesting.
Casey G. Smith: Totally. My my mom went to the, my mom doesn't go to the theater. I said, Mom, you got to go see this movie. This is important for the culture.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like going out to vote basically.
Casey G. Smith: Vote for the culture. Exactly. Right. Exactly. I was like, we want more of this, we vote with our dollars. And she went out, took my, she went out, saw it, and she she enjoyed it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: I was like, all right. But 1.3 billion at the global box office. That's right. That's right. So also continuing to smash the misnomer of people in Hollywood saying for a while, oh, you know, black films, you know, don't don't carry, you know, well internationally.
Reginald Titus Jr.: They can no longer lie to us basically.
Casey G. Smith: Exactly. So, um, after of course, Black Panther, then he was then in Infinity War and then of course in Avengers End Game. And obviously we all were excited and looking forward to him returning as Black Panther. He also had the the film uh 21 Bridges that came out.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Um, and also he was in The Five Bloods, the Spike Lee film.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Most recently.
Casey G. Smith: Most recently, right. And of course, there was a a social media post that that had gone up with him and where he looked thin and and some fans showed concern. Uh when I I saw the post and I I thought it was just him preparing for the role after I'd seen the movie The Five Bloods. And uh unfortunately it was far more serious than we realized. And um August 28th of 2020, um his his family put up a a post and said it it is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Uh Chadwick was diagnosed diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it the last four years that it progressed to stage four. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all. Uh yeah, he brought films to Um, mhm mhm mhm. Is he in a new film that that's coming out? Um that's kind of talking about civil rights. Is there another film he's he's in that's about to hit theaters?
Casey G. Smith: Yes, so, um from The Five Bloods, uh August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more, uh all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. Lord. Uh it is with honor, excuse me, it was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home with his wife and family by his side.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Amen. That's the way to bounce, man. You know, with the family, it's my my cousin bounce, you know, just family around and it's time to let let the ghost go. But man, he left left behind a good legacy, man. That we can be proud of. You can got some some positive images, um that you can go and and feel empowered, you know, I I know, you know, when we released our film, like it was literally like two weeks after Black Panther came out and kind of just felt like we were kind of part of it. And it was it was you that suggested we not drop our film the same week as Black Panther.
Casey G. Smith: Absolutely, absolutely. I was like, no.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Good good call.

Casey G. Smith: But here at Filmmaker Commentary, again, I I I echo Reginald's sentiments. Um, an amazing legacy from an actor who I believe, man, had had so much more uh I think, excuse me, an amazing talent and human being who I believe had so much more to give. I I have no doubt he would have gone on to direct uh some some amazing films in the future.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, for sure. For sure.
Casey G. Smith: Uh cuz he he was just he just came across as a consummate professional. Um, you know, he he carried himself with with an air of of of regalness, but at the same time, you know, like just down to Earth, just man, I I I'm not going to lie, man, like uh this this one was was a heartbreaker in in the midst of all that's taken place in 2020.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. 2020 has been a hell of a year.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, it has. Yes, it has.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's like we just can't take blow after blow. It's just like, all right, mercy.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Yeah. Goodness. Uh, but but Chadwick, uh our condolences to to your your family. Um and to to all the fans out there, you know, I mean, Black Panther brought us all together, regardless of where you were from. I think it it brought the world together. And and it's a testament to the progress that that we can make uh to the respect that we can give to all people, regardless of where they're from. So, you know, as we take the time to to remember uh Chadwick's memory and his his legacy and now that he now that he lies uh amongst the Pantheon uh Pantheon of of great heroes that he portrayed now as one of them. Um, may we all look to uh treat each other with a little more respect and dignity and and push push through and persevere like he did.
Reginald Titus Jr.: True. Um, just to kind of add to it, when he was at Howard, um going to the I think it was to the Oxford education, what I didn't know is Felicia Rashad was his teacher. And he couldn't afford to go to the out of uh the out of country uh university.
Casey G. Smith: Study abroad.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And so he, she found somebody to pay his way. Felicia Rashad, you know, was a teacher. Shout out. Turns out that it was Denzel Washington that paid his way to the thing.
Casey G. Smith: See, I thought it was just a general scholarship that he that he had put money into. I didn't know he had directly funded Chadwick.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. And but, you know, I don't know if that's direct, you know, from Felicia Rashad, kind of orchestrating that. You know what I mean? Cuz I I didn't I didn't even know, you know, she was teaching at Howard. So I'm just like, whoa.
Casey G. Smith: Right.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The one Howard is, you know, the spot. Uh almost went there for for law school. You know, there was yeah, there was a point in time where I was like trying to make that decision because it was like, so I was looking at schools that will be the least amount of money to pay, but push out people that make the most money. And it was Howard University, mainly because you're there, you're watching. You know, you that the connection and you're in DC.
Casey G. Smith: Connection and location. Yes, yes, sir. Location, location, location.
Reginald Titus Jr.: And so almost went there, but after talking to some, you know, a friend about it, I decided that path was not, the legal path was not for me.
Casey G. Smith: Okay.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The lifestyle, the lifestyle what it takes.
Casey G. Smith: Gotcha.
Reginald Titus Jr.: The lifestyle, it's hard on a lot of families.

Casey G. Smith: There's wisdom in counsel, right?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes, sir. But we just wanted to take a moment to Yeah, so just oh, uh I say that to say uh Denzel Washington, he was kind of talking about uh Chadwick Boseman. He's like, man, these guys, you know, cuz Chadwick Boseman, it was a speech where he was just talking about, you know, if it wasn't for these guys, we wouldn't be where we're at. And then Denzel Washington, you know, I just did a little, you know, a little just a little bit, you know, to kind of everything else is all him, you know, I just did a little bit. But um, when I he said, when I look at Black Panther, it's like, oh he said, oh, these guys are they're leading the way. This is the new wave, you know, so to get that that mutual respect, but at the same time, you know, seeing Denzel Washington watch Chadwick Boseman saying this like, you got tears in his eyes like, whoa. And, you know, Denzel usually, you know, don't cry and something, but it's when you've been through a certain experience, you know, when you're a certain age and you get that respect, but at the same time, you see how far the medium has gone.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. Exactly.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You know.
Casey G. Smith: He cried, and I know uh uh uh Dick Gregory, he said, um uh uh what movie was that, Django, you know, meant something for him because it was a, you know, they didn't let black men get on horses or, you know, that that was

Casey G. Smith: Wasn't available. So it was like, they kind of understand it. Anyhow, yes, he left behind a good legacy.

Movies Watched - "Don't F**k with Cats" & "New Mutants"
Casey G. Smith: How about movies watched?
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes.
Casey G. Smith: So let's jump into Don't F**k with the Cats.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Okay. How about that? You made that recommendation.
Casey G. Smith: Yes, yes, yes. Uh, I I I literally just finished watching the third episode before uh we jumped in. And so if you haven't seen Don't Watch the Cats, it's a a mini docu-series on Netflix. And uh we're going to talk about it, so there may be spoilers.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Oh, yeah. There will be spoilers for sure.
Casey G. Smith: So, you might want to jump ahead maybe about like six, seven minutes or so, but we jumping in.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yes. So what do you think?
Casey G. Smith: What the hell? I'm going.
Reginald Titus Jr.: I I had no idea this thing was out there. I knew nothing about any of this. This is my first time hearing, seeing any of it. But um, really well done, really effective, and at the last 10 minutes have this impressive cinematic quality to it. The way they they the way they hearken back like a almost like a um uh what I'm thinking of uh uh M. Night Shyamalan, almost like the end of Unbreakable. Oh, like the reveal, yeah. Yeah, bam, bam, and cut, you know, to the things that they build up and like oh oh oh. Oh. Yes. Yeah, man. And then all the Basic Instinct time like, what in the world? So Don't F with the Cats is about um some crazy kid that's on the internet creating these horrific videos of murdering cats. It starts It starts off.
Reginald Titus Jr.: That's how it starts off.
Casey G. Smith: Right. A uh yeah, a group of people, well, people on Facebook see yeah, a two cats get killed by being like vacuum suction into a a bag and suffocated basically. And it starts this group to form that initially has thousands of people and they're trying to find this guy and they're trying to find hints and clues and then eventually another video pops up of a cat being killed fed to a python. Yep. And a a core group of them just they they literally start just breaking down and examining every aspect of this video, just trying to find clues. The the the wall sockets, the posters, the this, the that to track down the location of where this person is and any identity. And they eventually do, which is pretty impressive, actually. Um, but at the same time, this person also realizes he's being watched and ultimately that's what that's what he wants. Um, and but it's showing the tendencies of a psychopath. Um, and typically, they say a lot of times with psychopaths it starts with animals and eventually graduates to people. And that's what happens. And just seeing this unfold and that these videos have been yeah, are being put up there and sent and people are watching it. And you find out this guy who's like a model. Yep. Um,
Reginald Titus Jr.: Wants to be like some social influencer, slash model, reality, I don't know.
Casey G. Smith: Slash actor, psycho. But he wants all the smoke. He wants all the fame and and eventually he graduates to get to murdering an actual human being, like butchering someone. And they figure out um that he's in based on upon an image that's taken, they figure out the street and because of a gas station and then they figure out that he's in Toronto. And oh man, it's just just it's just insane what ensues from there. They try to contact the police, the police are non-responsive to them, but they eventually do discover the a guy discovers the body in a suitcase that's locked and then the police finally get involved and they see what's happening and they see the video and uh that begins the manhunt basically. Lord. And they eventually track him down as he gets to Florida cuz he he wants the he's a big fan of Catch Me If You Can, the Leonardo DiCaprio film. And loves to leave breadcrumbs, wants to be tracked, but damn is he smart, man. The way he sets this up. Wow. And then the way this documentary runs, like it gets you doubting for like, oh wait a minute, maybe he maybe Manny Lopez is the one that's Cuz even he makes claims that someone named Manny Lopez has been abusing him and and leading him on, and they even go to his mom, you know, they interview his mom and she's like, those those animal those animal lover people, they're just terrible, you know. She's she's just got the blinders of a mother on, you know, and wants to believe the best of her of her son. Um, but man, when like when you when you get to the end of this thing. Yes. Um, and this this is going to lead into our talking about Basic Instinct. When you get to the end and you see that this guy is is doing things beat for beat. He has multiple aliases. Yep. Uh, one being uh C. Trenell. Oh wait, Trammel. C.
Reginald Titus Jr.: This has been a while since I've seen it so I don't have some of the details aren't in my brain anymore.
Casey G. Smith: One of his aliases is an alias by the name of uh yeah, C. Trammel. Um, which, you know, one of his favorite movies. He literally, like his mom keeps a keychain, like a that he that he used to have, of from Basic Instinct. Sharon Stone's character in that film is called Catherine Trammel. So, C. Trammel. Um, wow. And then when he when he's when he's in the like when they they they've caught him, he's in the interrogation room and he asked he he he's like being real shy and coy and people are like, can this be the guy? Can this be the killer? And he's he's like, oh can I'm cold. Can I have a a a a blanket or something to put on? And they give him that and then he asked for a cigarette. You know, and he crosses his legs, whatever. And you don't really think anything like, okay, wow, this guy's just acting like a real, you know, wimp or whatever. Like, okay, maybe there's something true about this Manny guy, but then all of a sudden like, you know, they begin to draw the clues together, okay, the alias of C. Trammel and then they keep he keeps saying that it's a guy named Manny, Manny Vasquez, the one that did this thing to him. Again, in the movie Basic Instinct, spoiler alert. In the movie Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone's, you know, person that she's engaged to, was engaged to, as Catherine Trammel, was a boxer by the name of Manny Vasquez. And then you find out this is just a a cover-up that he had created. He had been going to lawyers and filing reports about this guy abusing him and and making pictures. I mean, just elaborate scheme. Yeah, I come back to the quote that I'll I'll use later on. He's dangerous or evil, but brilliant.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, so amazing recommendation, I must say. I was like,
Reginald Titus Jr.: I've redeemed myself from Money Heist.
Casey G. Smith: I was like, wow. I I I'm not knocking Money Heist, I'm just saying it's not my cup of tea. But the world the world says otherwise, so kudos to the world, I'm just, it's not you, it's me. Blah blah blah blah blah. But this, this was this was impressive. Oh, yes, it is crazy. Yeah. I'm going to I'm going to recommend it to some people for sure, man.
Reginald Titus Jr.: It's crazy.
Casey G. Smith: When they did the montage and they cut it against Basic Instinct and showing him doing that, I was like, my man, that had at the time I had I'm familiar with certain scenes in Basic Instinct, haven't seen the whole thing so at the time. And so like now that I've seen it, I was like, oh. Bro.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Haunting.
Casey G. Smith: Haunting, man. Cuz again, I finished Basic Instinct and the commentary, and then I watched this last. I had I had I had I had a half.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Like dessert. Yeah. Something like that. Something like that. I was like, what? Man, it's kind of terrifying, man, honestly. Yes, yes. For me, what have I watched? Recently, I never really had like an animation TV show that I just consistently watch or anything like that. This shows that I check every now and then like Family Guy or every now and then Simpsons or something like that, but nothing where I'm just really, really into these days. Um, a lot of people have been talking about Rick and Morty forever, for years. You know, podcasts is randomly out here, periodically. And had nothing to do. I think this was Saturday or Friday. I can't remember what day it was. But I was just like, you know what? It it was Saturday morning. Uh cuz Shanti was dropping the kids off. So I was like, no one's here. Let's push play on Rick and Morty. Blown away. Pilot. I I was just sucked in. I so much so that I even brought my wife. I said, you got to check this out. And it's smart. She enjoys it. It gives us stuff to talk about. There's pop culture. There's a little bit of everything. So, uh Rick and Morty, man. I'm on the second season right now.
Casey G. Smith: I've been you a time or two on this podcast.
Reginald Titus Jr.: You probably did. Just throwing that out there.
Casey G. Smith: And the reason why I got into it a couple years back was because again, at my job, I'm speaking to high school students and they constantly were wearing T-shirts and I'd ask, what's your favorite animated, you know, show? And they would often say, I I hear Rick and Morty. Like, every other, I'm like, huh, okay. And so finally I I decided to check it out myself and I was like, dude, this is It's so gross, but this is so awesome. You're right. It is smart and oh man. Yeah. I'm I'm so glad you had a chance to to jump into it.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah. I'm in the world now. Hey, Rick and Morty. Yeah, it is quite good. I don't know, Rick. So,
Casey G. Smith: Come on, Morty. Get get what what are you doing? Come on, let's go. Oh boy.
Reginald Titus Jr.: So, oh man, that's gross. Yeah, Morty is like the most nervous, like teenager ever. So yeah, so that's that's Get it from his dad, though. Yeah. I don't know. What what I can't even do with it. Like, wait a minute, Rick. He's just just walk all over that guy. So, yeah, Rick and Morty, man, that's um that's where we're at, season, yeah, season two, episode two, that's where we're at right now. Um, one more thing I'll mention. I saw kinda saw The New Mutants, the uh previous Fox film, now it's under the the label of uh 20 21st Century Films. The rebranding. 21st Century Films. They just erased him. Pretty much. Never happened. 21st Century Films. And I saw it I saw it a drive-in. It's my first time at a drive-in. And unfortunately, uh it wasn't dark enough, cuz the film is very dark. It wasn't dark enough outside, too much light pollution, and there was a concert thing happening on another screen adjacent to ours. That could be a problem. Total problem. I could I mean, literally, could barely make out the film. Um, not a good experience. And while watching is when I found out about the passing of Chadwick. So it just kind of marred It's been a rough weekend. Yeah, it's bad. That was a that was a not a good Friday. So I I want to watch it again. I'll I'll wait till it comes out on, you know, I think it's going to I think because of streaming rights, and this is why Disney made sure they release in the theaters, because it's going to it's going to go to HBO Max first. That's why they didn't just release it streaming wise because it wouldn't go to Disney Plus. It's going to go to HBO Max first. So, I'll have to uh I'll check it out there. But um, but no, I from what I saw, I I I I enjoyed it. I'm I'm I'm familiar with The New Mutants and uh you know, they made they definitely made some big changes. I know the creator, one of the creators of the uh of that team, man, was really not happy with it. They even spelled his name wrong in the in the in the credits. Oh, man. Was that on purpose or? No. So it's somebody else's oversight, but he yeah, he went he he went in on them. So, but yeah, the Mutants. Unbelievable. Um, I don't think I've seen anything else. I know I've recently seen an interview on YouTube from a wrestler called New Jack. It's on Vlad TV. Just a random interview. I don't know how I got on my timeline. But I looked at his face, his guy's forehead looks mangled. It looks like someone pulled a chunk of forehead off and then threw it back on backwards. Like, that's what his forehead looks like right now. And I'm just like, man, this is an interesting looking character cuz he's in a suit. He's got like these staples or something over his eyebrows. I like this guy, um, but he's talking about how, what's the line that I I sent to you? Um, he he was talking about Vince McMahon and if somebody else dies in the ring or something, you know, it's their fault. Something something about somebody people dying in the ring. So I was like, you know what, I remember you talking about people dying in the ring, wrestling, and so I just kind of want to talk about it. But anyhow, watched this interview and I had no idea how horrific the wrestling industry is. You know, I'm saw some things, you know, heard some things from more like kind of like spiritual stuff and all that. Uh, but had no idea. And um, yeah, but anyhow, this interview is very entertaining. This guy is candid like nobody else. He is a great interview. And he from what I read in the comments, he's kind of toned down compared to how his character is.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah. New Jack is uh an independent wrestler who at one time actually was a bounty hunter, if I'm not mistaken.
Reginald Titus Jr.: Yeah, for 10 years.
Casey G. Smith: Yeah, and is yeah, 100% certifiable. He's crazy. And I've I've I've known about him since the late '90s in in the uh Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion. He was a guy you would bring out on pay-per-views, and if you were in the audience, you probably stood back 10 feet because this guy was diving off balconies. I mean, you could just you could just put in a highlight reel of New Jack and you will see some of the craziest stuff. I mean, the bumps, bumps is basically when you you you hit the you hit the mat or the floor, uh that's called a bump. And there's all kinds of ways to do that. I mean, this guy, I mean, literally, in in civic centers, like jumping off the the balcony onto somebody through a table, cuz his finisher was only a diving headbutt. He
